With a lot of teams from all around Europe and even the United States showing interest in participating in a possible Crossfire Intel Challenge 7 Call of Duty 4 tournament, I've decided to provide everyone with an overview of the possible ways to get to the event, what it costs and list some of the accomodations close to the event.
The WZZRD Gaming Center is located at the ground floor of the CineStar cinema (
www.cinestar.nl) in Enschede, the Netherlands. The center is easily accessible by train, with the Enschede Drienerlo station just metres away. Beware that Enschede has two train stations, "Enschede Drienerlo" (almost directly next to the event) and "Enschede", which brings you to the city centre.
Across the street of the CineStar building, you can find the football stadium of FC Twente, the current number one of the Dutch football league, ahead of PSV and Ajax. They however won't be playing at home the weekend the event takes place.
A map of the location:
FlyingFrom Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) to WZZRD EnschedeThe Schiphol Airport is located in the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, and is by far the biggest and most well known airport in the Netherlands and all major carriers go there (with the exception of a number of low cost carriers like Ryanair, who avoid it due to the high cost).
What sets this airport apart from the others listed below, except for its size, is the availability of a train station at the airport. The Schiphol train station (not to be confused with the Amsterdam Central station) is 2 hours and 20 minutes away from Enschede Drienerlo by train and leaves every 30 minutes during the day, with the last train leaving at 22:49 CET. You have to switch trains once or twice, depending on which train you take. Costs: €22,80 per person one way, €38,90 for a return ticket. For more information check out
NS.nl (English version). Website:
www.schiphol.nl (in english).
If you want to visit the city centre of Amsterdam before or after your stay, there is a regular connection between the Schiphol train station and the Amsterdam central station.
From Eindhoven Airport to WZZRD EnschedeRyanair does not fly to Amsterdam, but they do land at Eindhoven Airport, in the south of the Netherlands. The airport is relatively small compared to Schiphol and does not have a train station. However, during the day, a bus (line 401) will depart from the airport to the Eindhoven Central train station every 10 minutes. From the Central Station you can reach the WZZRD Gaming Center (Enschede Drienerlo station) by train.
It takes approximately 2 hours and 35 to 55 minutes, depending on which train you take, and you have to switch trains 2 to 3 times. The trains go every 30 minutes during the day. Costs: €25,10 per person one way, €41,00 for a return ticket. For more information check out
NS.nl (English version). Website:
www.eindhovenairport.com (in english).
From Rotterdam Airport to WZZRD EnschedeThe Rotterdam Airport is similar to Eindhoven in a way that it's a lot smaller than the Amsterdam Airport, there is no trainstation at the airport and the time it takes from the Rotterdam Central Station to Enschede is almost exactly the same.
There is a regular bus service from the Rotterdam Airport to the Rotterdam Central Station, which can be found on their website. From the Rotterdam Central Station, its a 2 and a half hour trip to the Enschede Drienerlo station (you have to switch trains twice), which leaves every 30 minutes during the day. Costs: €24,70 per person one way, €40,70 for a return ticket. For more information check out
NS.nl (English version). Website:
www.rotterdam-airport.nl (in english).
From Weeze Airport (Germany) to WZZRD EnschedeAn alternative to the Dutch airports is the German airport "Weeze" (just across the border with the Netherlands), which is one of the airports a low cost carrier like Ryanair uses. The Weeze airport is approximately 85 km from the WZZRD Enschede Center by car and would require to you take a taxi (as far as I know). Website:
www.airport-weeze.de (in english).
BusSeveral teams from the United Kingdom are looking to organise a bus service, depending on the cost involved. We will keep you informed once more becomes known.
CarIn case you plan to travel to the Netherlands by car, navigation software would definately help! The address of the WZZRD Gaming Center in Enschede is as follows:
WZZRD Enschede/Cinestar
Colosseum 60
7500 BC Enschede
Tel: +31 53 8504759

From Paris, France, its approximately 600 km to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take about 6 hours without traffic jams.

From Copenhagen, Denmark, its approximately 650 km to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take about 7 hours without traffic jams.

From Antwerp, Belgium, its approximately 250 km to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take about 2 hours and 30 minutes without traffic jams.

From Prague, Czech Republic, its approximately 750 km to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take about 7 hours and 30 minutes without traffic jams.

From Warsaw, Poland, its approximately 1100 km to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take about 11 to 12 hours without traffic jams.

From Rome, Italy, its approximately 1600 km to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take about 15 hours without traffic jams.

From Berlin, Germany, its approximately 500-600 km (depending on the route) to the WZZRD Center in Enschede, the Netherlands and would take 5 to 6 hours without traffic jams.
(These numbers have been rounded off to give an approximation and are taken from Google Maps).
TrainTo check the possibility of travelling by train, have a look at the 'International Travel' website of the Dutch railways, which can be found
HERE. Another option is to have a look at the schedule of the TGV at the TGV Europe website,
HERE.
AccomodationThe WZZRD.nl website lists two alternatives with regards to hotel and accomodation, both with a special discount price (if you book via WZZRD). The 'budget' and 'comfort' options are listed below and on the
WZZRD website (scroll down), which also includes some more information on how to book.
It might be important to contact them months in advance, since several tournaments will be hosted during the Crossfire Intel Challenge 7 and those people also need to sleep!
The WZZRD budget option"There are 7 huts walking distance from the WZZRD gamecenter. Each hut can hold 15 people. The beds are without bedlinnen, so a sleeping bag might come handy. There are shared shower and toilet facilities." (WZZRD.nl)
15 person hut: € 250,- a night
1 person: € 20,- a night
The WZZRD comfort option"The Logica Hotel has 24 rooms, all of which can be used either as single or double rooms. Most rooms have a shower and a toilet. The rooms are divided over four apartments. Each apartment has a common lounge room, provided with telephone, TV, coffee and tea facilities and a minibar. Some of the rooms have a shared bathroom." (WZZRD.nl)
Single Room: € 41,- a night
Double Room: € 58,- a night
The Logica hotel is a
15 minute walk from the WZZRD Gaming Center (map below). The English version of their website can be found (
HERE). Beware that the discount only applies when you book via WZZRD.
Address:
Campuslaan 60
7522 NR Enschede
Tel: +31 (0) 53 433 1366

Another option is:
Eden Hotel - Picture courtesy of Booking.com |
Eden Hotel de Broeierd
According to their official website the hotel is "known as the oldest and cosiest inn in the region "Twente"! The hotel has 61 luxurious hotel rooms and is built in an authentic Saxon style." The Eden Hotel de Broeierd is close to the WZZRD Gaming Center and rated quite well on both Booking.com and Zoover.nl: 8.2 / 10. It's more expensive than the confort and budget accomodations, but closer to the event (
just a 7 minute walk) and a good alternative in case the two other options are sold out.
A twin room (for two) currently costs €245 for three nights (Thursday-Friday, Friday-Saturday, Saturday-Sunday), which is approximately €40 per person, a night. However, if you decide to stay for just two nights, (Friday-Saturday, Saturday-Sunday), the price drops and would total €130, which means approximately €32,50 per person per night (via Booking.com).
Their official website (in english) can be found
HERE; a map is listed below.
Address:
Hengelosestraat 725
7521 PA Enschede
Tel: +31 (0) 53 850 6500

Another alternative, but only for teams coming by car:
Sandton Resort Bad BoekeloIf your team isn't coming by car, it might be better to look at one of the other options, but for the teams who are driving to Enschede, the Sandton Resort Bad (located just outside Enschede in the small town of Boekelo) might be a good alternative. It is situated on a 25 hectare estate, surrounded by woods, approximately 10 km from the event.
The four star resort has a 7.9 / 10 rating at Booking.com and is priced similarly to the Eden Hotel, although in this case its not on walking distance from the event (unless you plan to walk 2 hours twice a day). By car, its a 15-20 minute drive, but the pictures of the location do look great.
A twin room (for two) currently costs €183,50 for three nights (Thursday-Friday, Friday-Saturday, Saturday-Sunday), which is approximately €30 per person, a night. If you decide to stay for just two nights, (Friday-Saturday, Saturday-Sunday), the price is €129, which means approximately €32,50 per person per night (via Booking.com). Breakfast however is included.
Their official website (in english) can be found
HERE.
Address:
Oude Deldenerweg 203
7548 PM Boekelo
Tel: +31 (0)53 - 428 30 05
In addition, it is also possible to stay in the city center of Enschede (have a look at sites such as Booking.com). There is a train connection between the Enschede Drienerlo Station and the Enschede Central Station, which costs € 2,20 for a one way ticket and takes approximately five minutes. The train leaves every 30 minutes, from early in the morning until 01:08 at night.
I will add more options that are on walking distance when I find them.
Websites to look atThree sites that might be interesting to look at for foreign teams:
- NS.nl (English version) - The official website of the Dutch railways, where you can check departure and arrival times, or even buy tickets in advance (although you might need some help, since its mainly catered to Dutch citizins). You can of course also buy tickets at the ticket machines at every train station.
- 9292ov.nl (English version) - The most popular website regarding public transport in the Netherlands. If you fill in your location of choice and the address or trainstation you'll be departing from, it gives you directions and the fastest ways of reaching your destination using the means of travelling of your choice (train, tram, bus, ferry, metro etc.)
- Google Maps - Speaks for itself, but the routeplanner feature does provide you with a nice overview of how to get from one place to another and how much time it will take (by foot or car), if you just fill in the address.
Feel like going tbh

Either way, it shouldn't be too difficult for teams to find the event, but you do need to know when to switch trains and what platform to go to. The Dutch railways site is available in English and very easy to use, so although its a little early for this, I would definitely recommend printing the schedule before going (you can't really do anything wrong if you follow that, since it contains all info).

must of taken some time, so thanks :)
i went in july and the train was direct from schiphol - enschede
Two trains go in that direction every hour and depending on which one you take, you have to switch trains either once or twice.
if any more info on the bus service is available, etc the location where we can get on it... that would be great, thanks

From Weeze I know there's a bus back-and-forth Wese Airport to Arnhem (20 euros). From there its a 2,5 hour train drive door2door.
-edit- any update(s) on any spaces on these rooms or whatever at the wzzrd centre? and does anyone know what "discounted fare" fkn means on the train ticket prices?
edited 2010-02-13 21:03:02
One more thing that is pretty important for everyone travelling by train. Buy tickets, you cannot buy them in the train and will get a fine of €35 + the prize of the ticket to your destination if you get caught.
You can buy tickets at the trainstations or via internet. In case you choose to book in advance via the ns.nl website, make sure that you take your passport or identity card with you (next to your e-ticket). They will check if your name matches.
