Tonya Welch, a name not many of you will know, has worked extensively for both the new Cyberathletes Professional League (CPL) and the Championship Gaming Series (CGS). She also worked on the World Series of Video Games and can be best described as a jack of all trades within the competitive gaming scene. Occupying herself mostly with the communication side of things she held high positions in the above mentioned organisations. She is now stepping out of the anomisity and safety of the background to blow the lid on the new CPL management, lead by Scott Valencia. Scott Valencia, like Tonya, held key positions in some of the largest gaming events the world has seen and worked on CGS, CPL and WSVG. Scott is now CEO of the new CPL, who
we reported are coming out with a new project in just mere weeks, with a hint going towards the return of the CPL as a global league - after focussing on the Asian market for two years.
Tonya has now written
a very extensive blog post on the Complexity Gaming website exposing Scott Valencia as a compulsive liar, who has spun a web of lies around his personal life, his business ventures and most notably the new CPL. Tonya explains: "All of this led up the the first outright lie that was propagated regarding the purchase of the CPL. There was NEVER a middle-eastern investment group from Abu Dhabi behind the purchase of the CPL. It was 100%, from beginning to end, a complete LIE, with every intention to deceive the owners of the CPL brand (at least, the other three partners were told the owners were included in this lie), the gamers, the potential investors, and the people at CGS"
With this fake investment company the previous owners of the CPL brand, with Angel Munoz on the forefront, were lead to believe an investment group had the funding to purchase the CPL brand and afterwards also the CAL brand. Money that didn't exist, money that was still to be found. Tonya continues to explain how lies ruled internally and externally and how one lie was covered up by making another bigger lie. She also stated that this would be the first of a series of blogs, where she spills her guts and apologizes to everyone she has hurt over the years after stopping to work for the new CPL in April 2009.
Even if this is a disgruntled employee getting her revenge she brings up some valid points and raises a lot of questions around the new CPL owners and their future intentions. TEK9 had secured an interview with Scott Valencia several months ago and after Scott had multiple times confirmed that he would be doing the interview he suddenly became deadly silent. Perhaps he didn't like how the questions also focussed around the fact that bar the new CPL, all business ventures he was involved in within gaming went belly up. The old CPL... gone. The WSVG... gone. The CGS... gone. What Scott Valencia is up to remains to be seen, but we suddenly have a reason to be very sceptical about all new announcements.
