stermy, fox salvage global finals spots

After an impressive run in the groupstages, surprisingly topping his group with 2-0 victories over av3k and GaRpY, mTw's Benjamin "calipt" Jakob was unable to continue his hot run in today's Intel Extreme Masters playoff matches, losing to an in form Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky in three straight games.

In the deciding game for a ticket for the Intel Extreme Masters Global Finals, the German went head to head with Italy's Alessandro "stermy" Avallone. Despite putting up a good fight, calipt's dreams were shattered as the Italian prevailed with relative ease, winning tourney9, dm13 and tourney7 by comfortable 4 to 8 frag margin.

His fellow countryman, Marcel "k1llsen" Paul, got off to an equally good start yesterday with wins over zsx, l1nkje and Cypher. Despite his first place finish in the groupstages, k1llsen was unfortunate to meet Dreamhack champion Maciej "av3k" Krzykowski in his first playoff game and lost after an intense five map game, which ended 3-2 in av3k's favour (ZTN: 1-9, DM13: 13-4, T9: 4-2, DM6: 4-7, T7: 1-14).

In a direct battle with Magnus "fox" Olsson for one of the six Intel Extreme Masters Global Finals tickets, k1llsen got off to a good start, winning his map choice, DM6, 6 to 4. The Swede was however quick to recover and won the next three games by a small margin (T7: 3-7, T9: 4-7, DM13: 3-6), leaving k1llsen with a game for 7th and 8th place against calipt.

Having won their playdown games and secured a spot in the global finals, former FPO team mates Magnus "fox" Olsson and Alessandro "stermy" Avallone made quite the show out of their 5th/6th place decider, resulting in an entertaining five map game. The match ended in a close 9-8 game and was won by fox, who was able to rocketjump away from stermy in the dying seconds of the game, thereby preventing the Italian (who was in complete control and making a comeback) from getting the final frag to take the game into overtime.
