After having seen the political interruptions in Modern Warfare 2 by the Australian, German, French and Dutch government, this time it is Russia not being too happy about the latest release of the Infinity Ward/Activision game. It comes as no surprise that Russia has a problem with the way its nationals are portrayed in the fourth MW2 mission "No Russian". Not only that but in general Russia is not too pleased that it has often been used as story line material especially when invasions and terrorist attacks are involved.
Spoiler alert
In the "No Russian" mission you play an American infiltrated in a Russian terrorist group lead by Makarov. As member of this group you take part in a massacre on a Russian airfield. The attack is interpretated by the Russians as an American attack on their home country after which they release a full scale assault on American soil. This particular "No Russian" mission has been the main reason why the game is rated 18+ and which was frowned upon by a lot of European governments, saying that this leads to more game related violence by teens.
For now every console version of Modern Warfare 2 is taken from the shelves in Russia. The government is now awaiting the censored version, without the specific mission, which should be ready within one month. In addition Infinity Ward has released a patch (PC/Steam) for the Russian version, which completely removes the mission from the game. For people from Russia who would still like to play the game as it was originally intended, simply buy the EU/US version of the game.

I dont think games inspire violence IRL..most people with an ounce of intelligence can distinguish between the two and as people are saying here they recognise that it plays on extremes (unfair, true... but then creating a game called "modern warfare" is bound to be sensitive to SOMEONE), to recognise a stereotype and to allow it to affect you are different things I think.
I played the GTA series from the age of about 13 probably, and haven't raped or killed any prostitutes (this week).

People are so quick to accuse someone when really you have to judge each case by it's own merit. If someone goes out and kills 1000 people with a LMG it's not because they saw it on CoD, it's because they are mental and have other factors causing it, such as extreme cases of bullying.

All of those were major atrocities as well as the numerous metro bombings. When i lived there I was always told to not to kick a cans etc in case they were booby trapped.
I am sure it would be entirely the same if we had to run around shooting people in UK/US etc soil. Yes we've had attacks here in London and the US but considering this has been going on for so long in Russia I can see entirely why they want the game to be altered over there, especially players playing the terrorists.
I could also see the rage of a statue being erected of a terrorist inside the Red Square if that did happen. Not only do IW made a crap game, they also disregard nation's feelings/cultures.

by the way the idea of that statue is taken from the monument to Tsar Peter I. that's fucking snub, especially combined with Soviet emblem and those words on the base of the statue.
ITS A FUKING EPIC MISSION :D
i still question the inclusion of a mission like this one anyway ...
It means people can't buy the game if they are below 18, if parents disregard this and buy their children the game then there is nothing IW can do about it
Pretty realistic tbh.
It could be seen as insensitive to the Russians but it is just a game. Someone needs to be the bad guy, I mean in this case the Russian civilians get massacred by Russians and it's blamed on the Americans so really no one is the bad guy in terms of nations.
I have no objection to either the mission or the Russians be used in the game, it could be some Australians used in the game for all i care. Russians are used because they were in the first game and it's the stereotypical bad guy. It's all over TV and movies with Russians and Middle eastern people being used as the bad guy, it's not frowned upon then and this is only the game equivalent.
I understand why the Russians would object but I personally think it's blown out of proportion
The PC version of the game is availiable since the 10th. Ye it doesn't have this mission, but as soon as you change the language in steam to English, the missions back.
As for consoles, they pretty much dont exist here, so if in usa you had 100xbox sales per 1 pc sale, here you have 100pc sales per 1 xbox sale.
And that makes sense, since the pc version of the game costs 8-12 euro, depending where you get it, and the xbox version goes for 30+.

would ban it too tbh
IW built up your emotions and human interaction with the game, you carried on playing because you wanted to defeat the Russians if not complete the game? ;)

2) It's pretty damn realistic, that kind of thing could happen. War on its own is "disgusting."
3) 18+ limit. Your own fault if your younger than that and have negative things to say about the game.
Enjoyed it in the campaign though:)
its just stupid killing even in a game so much inocent people...
end topic :D
Nuff said.
its goin to make russia look even worse cus the seem to invade america without a reason^^
