IEM's First Last Chance Qualifier Played Tonight*

Posted by Bob Bcrbo Van de Voorde on 2010-10-13 19:38:45
A couple of weeks ago, the ESL became the center of a small scandal when several known Quake Live stars had uttered their discontent at the Qualifying system of the Intel Extreme Masters Season V. They rebutted these claims by quickly announcing six more slots were to be added and thus giving the stars another shot at making it to the IEM Season V.

In total two Last Chance Qualifier cups will have to be played, out of which both top three will yet be granted access to the biggest Quake Live competition currently around. Players such as Alessandro "stermy" Avallone, Maciej "Avekkk" Krzykowski, Sebastian "Spart1e" Siira, Marius "Guard" Ivanauskas and Nikolay "agentJkezooR" Mayorov have already enrolled and are currently fighting their way through the single elimination best-of-three bracket.

ESL TV will be looking to deliver the public some of those final matches live as well, which are looking to be promising with so many of the current European TOP 10 in attendance. They will start their coverage from the Quarter Finals, which is expected to happen sometime around 22:00 CEST. You can follow it over here: ESL-TV.

This is merely the first of two Last Chance Qualifier cups and should some of those big names fail to qualify today, they will have another shot in the second cup, this coming Sunday. One of those big names who signed up, but is looking to not qualify is the Italian superstar Alessandro "stermy" Avallone, as he delivered the following message on his public facebook profile:

"Bad news. My whole area is without internet and it seems like it will take awhile before they can fix it..I might miss the IEM qualifier :(("

This was sent out into the world 4 hours ago, but there have been no further updates. Currently it is still uncertain whether or not the Italian will miss out on his first shot at advancing. We will try to keep you up-to-date about any changes or news coming from the cup.

**UPDATE**

It was indeed so, Alessandro "stermy" Avallone did not show up and had to forfeit his first match against British level^ shoutcaster, nvc. The cup went along without him and the most notable result was former Call of Duty star, Kenneth "plaZma" Aulie's result in the cup, just barely missing out on the final three spots, losing to Marius "Guard" Ivanauskas in the match for 3rd place. Here is the TOP 3:

Sebastian "Spart1e" Siira
Maciej "Avekkk" Krykowski
Marius "Guard" Ivanauskas

Congratulations to the winners and we are looking foward to the Last Chance Qualifier #2.
