id Software is probably the game developer that has done the most for eSports with their games. Doom, Wolfenstein and probably especially Quake have brought the eSport scene to where it is right now. Today they announced that the company has been purchased by ZeniMax Media Inc., the parent company of game publisher Bethesda Softworks. You might know Bethesda and the Bethesda Game Studios developers from games such as Fallout and the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, commented on the transaction: “This was a unique opportunity to team with a smart, sophisticated publisher like Bethesda Softworks where the interests of the studio and the publisher will be fully aligned in the development and marketing of our titles. In addition, we will now have financial and business resources to support the future growth of id Software, a huge advantage which will result in more and even better games for our fans.”

John Carmack, Technical Director of id Software said: “This puts id Software in a wonderful position going forward. We will now be able to grow and extend all of our franchises under one roof, leveraging our capabilities across multiple teams while enabling forward looking research to be done in the service of all of them. We will be bigger and stronger, as we recruit the best talent to help us build the landmark games of the future. As trite as it may be for me to say that I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am."

The most important item of the whole transaction is probably that internally the structure of id Software will not change. They will continue developing the games the community loves so much and have stated that the internal organisation will not change, nor will the projects that id Software is working on.

An experimental project with no guarantees of profit coupled with a new parent company...
I'm thinking this might be really bad for QL.

this is a great move i hear, Zenimax wont interfere with iD, it will just push sellings as with Bethesda.
