Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Posted by Steven dfb Leunens on 2010-01-18 20:08:51

Heaven Media is asking you to donate to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

A major earthquake struck Haiti on 12 January just ten miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

As many as 200,000 people are believed to be dead, and it is still too early to know the full human cost of this tragedy.

We have set up a page for donations to Oxfam's efforts through JustGiving.com, a UK-based organisation which facilitates donations to a number of charities, and with a target of £500 set, secretly we'll be disappointed if we can't hit four-digits.

We believe that the decision to help should be an easy one, but in case you needed a little extra persuasion, here it is: Adam Godfrey, our very own Business Developement Manager at Heaven Media and of course the Reason Gaming manager/owner, has agreed that if we hit the £500, he will allow himself to be tied up at Multiplay's i39 event, for the community to chuck wet sponges at him!

Oh, and as an added incentive, if we can double our target, and hit £1,000... he'll do it wearing only his underwear. Who said that helping your fellow human beings couldn't have a second (albeit very minor) purpose?

Keep an eye out later in the week for another announcement to help spur on donations - we think we've got a real cracker in store for you.

No matter how much or how little you feel you can afford, do your part now, even the smallest of donations will help.

Donate now at http://www.justgiving.com/esports-for-haiti

If you like, why not reply in the comments below telling us that you donated and if you are feeling brave and want to shame the others, let us know what you donated ;)

Thanks everyone, this is done by the staf at HM and it all goes 100% to Oxfam. I know a few people are critical of fundraising efforts when companeis are involved, but this is just staff using our access to the site to help.

i agree with everything erasus has said we need to focus this money on helping get our OWN country out of the billions of pounds in debt.

+0 thumbs
I hope your joking.

Look at our taxes, they take so much off us and what happens to it? Oh yeah thats right, given to immigrants who abuse the system. They got themselves into debt, why should we bail them out for their stupid mistakes?

I would rather burn all my money than give it to this country

I love how narrow minded some of you people are. Think about it, yeah it's debt and there is problems with this country, but when another country is in need surely the lives of others comes over wiping out your own debt. Who gives a fuck about debt when you can save someones life. FML, stop being selfish and actually think about the lives of others first.

Just my 2 cents

to be fair ryan is raising a good point, but in a shit way.

Charity in a recession is tough but the bottom line is up to 200,000 people died and thousands more are homeless and have had their lives destroyed. Yeah things may not be great for us right now but it is our responsibility as a leading nation to step in and help, its the compassionate thing to do. People should give where they can, that doesnt mean they have to if they cant. I dont think anyone ever advocates that.

Our countries debt for supporting our lucky and fortunate western society is very different to a tragic natural disaster that has caused the death of 200,000 people - I don’t see how you can compare them. Don't expect to see an appeal on here for 'Save us from the Credit Crunch' or any other silly political opinion. We are talking about human life’s, plain and simple.

Was what I was trying to say, but you just put it loads better. I understand that we have problems, but their problems come first, end of imo.

Oxfam is a well established charity in the UK, has a 50 year track record and is considered trusted. The 'JustGiving' web site is their online partner. All the money goes to this appeal, that’s why we used this system as opposed to a Paypal account etc. It also lets you see the progress which is currently at £300! Give via any charity, maybe a local one or one you have used before, it does not matter how it gets there as long as it gets there tbh

I'm sure this will go over 1000

If you are a uk taxpayer, then gift aid the donation, that means the charity receives 100% of the donation and our government doesnt get a penny then!

"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
We got bills to pay,
We got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know we can't slow down,
We can't hold back,
Though you know, we wish we could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good"

now although i think this was terrible, there are also alot more concerns such as aids, 3 million people a year die of this disease my 2 cents :( - P.s ive already donated to halti i just think that people should open there eyes to other things happening in the world not just things like this which make " BIG NEWS HEADLINES". A child dieing every 3 seconds because of aids doesnt even make the news my personal feelings

People are now looking online for ways to help the Haiti earthquake victims. Ok, any charity that you can set up a donation to over text message seems like it has to be a scam. It certainly looks like you'll need http://personalmoneystore.com/Payday-Loans/ and a lawyer to contest fraudulent card charges, but some of them are for real. For instance, the text Haiti to 90999 campaigns are being run by the American Red Cross, and similar campaigns are being run by Wyclef Jean (text Haiti to 501501) and the Clinton Foundation (text Haiti to 20222). They can set up direct deposit with the smallest donation being for $10, which is so small that you really don't have an excuse not to.

It has always been like that. Donate $1,000,000 to a Cancer foundation and enough money will send to get new blankets for these people with cancer in the hospital in only one city. [o.o]

+0 thumbs
fuck 'em, they'll sort it out eventually

i really hate charity... too much money falls into the wrong hands. if i donate anything (and ive done this before) ill buy something or make sure my money ACTUALLY GOES ON WHAT ITS INTENDED TO.

even the money we give to cancer foundations gets spent elsewhere, ive heard high estimates, but id say a conservative guess is about 30% a lot of the time.

makes me sick.
