ESL reveal Extreme Masters Dubai groups

Details of the group draws for the upcoming IEM Dubai QuakeLive tournament have been revealed today by ESL. The $6,500 event has attracted the hottest talents from Europe, Asia and North America and there will be no easy games from the kick off on October 17th to the finals on the 19th.

Group A provides the mouth-watering prospect of seeing Quakecon champion Shane "rapha" Hendrixson take on returning star Anton "Cooller" Singov with mousesports' newest signing Magnus "fox" Olsson thrown into the mix for good measure in what is perhaps the toughest group. Groups B, C and D might be slightly more straightforward for the higher seeds but none of them will be taking anything for granted with the likes of "Jibo", "fazz" and "Chance" all gunning for an upset.

The top two from each group will advance into a single elimination, best-of-five playoff system with every single match streamed live on ESL-TV. Regular hosts James Harding and Joe Miller will be making the trip to the United Arab Emirates and you can follow all the action on either the free video stream or via the high quality subscription service available for less than €3 a month.

Update: ESL have announced that "Jibo" and "Cooller" will swap groups in order to avoid the latter playing his new mousesports teammate, "fox". This ties in with ESL's previous announcement that the seedings would be done in such a way as to avoid group stage matches between teammates and players from the same country.

Group A

United States Shane "rapha" Hendrixson
Sweden Magnus "fox" Olsson
China Zhibo "Jibo" Fan
France Pierre-Emeric "l1nkje" Portier

Group B

Austria Richard "noctis" Gansterer

Italy Alessandro "stermy" Avallone

Sweden Pelle "fazz" Söderman
Germany Felix "smoke" Pafel

Group C

Sweden Sebastian "Spart1e" Siira
United States Tim "DaHanG" Fogarty
Russia
Anton "Cooller" Singov
United Arab Emirates Anas "spammah" Ilyas

Group D

Belarus Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky

France Kevin "strenx" Baeza
United States Chance "Chance" Lacina
Sweden Michael "madix" Hindersson

IEM Dubai Maplist

DM6 (Campgrounds)
ZTN (Blood Run)
DM13 (Lost World)
T7 (Furious Heights)
T9 (House of Decay)

Excited about the event but I just don't understand why t9 is featured in all these events. It pretty much ruined the otherwise excellent Quakecon final.

Looking forward to some great games. Group A looks like the group of death to me but actually all the other groups look tough as well. Gonna be interesting!

Cooller's a big question mark. If he's been practicing like mad then he might have a shot but after the QC disappointment fox is out for blood. Gonna go with the swede.
Chance vs. Strenx is another mystery. Completely random guess, I'll give the spot to chance.

A Rapha, fox
B Noctis, Stermy
C Spart1e, DaHang
D Cypher, chance

Any idea how Jibo's doing?

cooller has been practicing like 6 hours per day for the last two weeks, if he can get back to his shape he will definitely get top4 and might even win the whole thing. Jibo is playing some QL aswell, mostly against cooller, so he might not learn alot from the new maps and new tactics but i expect him to do good. And strenx is better than chance skill-wise, but the american might play smarter so u never know.

I don't understand how it's a competitive map at all. No matter how much I play it, it never feels right like some of the others. Even ca1/ca2 are more interesting to play...

It's a bit like Phrantic with lots of lg/rl and no rail.

I like it but haven't played it much.

No players were allowed to be in the same group as another fellow countryman. Same for team, with the exception of mouz, as they announced fox too late.

New groups look a little better but Cooller still has a VERY tough job to progress. He's lost to DaHanG before (in Q4 if I remember correctly).

Just wanted to show that DaHanG is no slouch for those who don't realise.

Yeh, Q4 results are probably not relevant as you say though :)

Q4 was totally on another planet, this is real quake so i don't think dahang can be much of a problem in most of the maps, could be totally wrong tho if the russian practiced drunk all the time :D

Ok, maybe it would be better to say that DaHanG beat Stermy and fox at Quakecon... in QuakeLive.
