After weeks of speculation, QuakeLive has been confirmed as one of the three games set to feature in the fourth season of ESL's prestigious Intel Extreme Masters (IEM). The decision was announced live this evening on ESL-tv by the league's project manager Michal "Carmac" Blicharz, a self-confessed QuakeLive fan and an avid proponent of 1v1 deathmatch.
Blicharz revealed exclusive details of the seaon's first IEM event which is set to take place at GamesCom in Cologne from the 19th to the 23rd of August. There QuakeLive will be featured alongside a super cup for Counter-Strike 1.6 and the opening round of the Global Challenge for World of Warcraft. The latter will both feature $10,000 in prize money while QuakeLive will start off with a more "low key" pro-am event.
Despite this, Blicharz has denied that QuakeLive will be a side event and confirmed a prize fund of $1,000 as well as a further "special prize" for the winner of the opening tournament. He described the event as "an open tournament... where everybody can sign up" and pledged to continue lobbying for larger QuakeLive events at future IEM stops.
"I know the game, I value the game... we are working very hard to make the season happen with QuakeLive", Blicharz explained. "The fact that I just want it in does not instantly get it in, but I am doing everything in my power to make sure it is."
