ESL have today confirmed that this season's Intel Extreme Masters will feature QuakeLive in both the European and North American Continental Challenges. This has been recognised as a sign by many of the likelihood that not only will the game feature at the so far unconfirmed LAN finals for these leagues but that it is also likely to appear again at the offline Global Challenge events once the tour completes the Asian section of its circuit.

Signup and prize information have yet to be released but ESL have confirmed a number of details for both the European and North American championships. Both qualifiers will feature 8 invited players and a 32 player bracket which will be followed by a standard group stage and playoff system. The North American finals are scheduled for November but the dates for the European finals are yet to be announced.

According to the ESL World homepage, "whether or not the QuakeLive season will be played entirely online or with LAN finals will be known in the coming weeks". Their opening event, the Pro/Am tournament at IEM Cologne, was won by SK's Shane "rapha" Hendrixson who will undoubtedly be one of the clear favourites going into any North American or future global events.

Update: id Software's community liason, Donnie "SyncError" Domino, has pledged on esreality.com that QuakeLive's developers will support ESL with "the hardware and setup" to run an offline event if the game is featured at the LAN finals.
