Cypher wins at ASUS Summer Cup

While Shane "rapha" Hendrixson was on his way to victory at the IEM in Germany, his fierce rival Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky was on a winning run of his own at the ASUS Summer Cup. The young Belarusian from Serious-Gaming made up somewhat for his defeats at Quakecon with a strong performance to come back from the lower bracket to take the top prize of 20,000 roubles in Moscow, Russia.

The tournament brought out the best of Eastern European Quake including big names such as
Fan "Jibo" Zhibo and Anton "cooller" Singov, fuelling speculation that it was only a matter of time before the pair made their mark in QuakeLive. The latter put in a strong performance today, winning the upper bracket before losing two rounds of ZTN to a player once described as his protege.

The tournament's success has raised complaints from the community about the lack of Russian QuakeLive servers, forcing the majority of the nation's top players to either play with frustratingly high ping or, like the ASUS Summer Cup, stick to Quake 3. If servers were to be made available it's clear that, on today's evidence, it would be a major boost to the game's competitive scene.

ASUS Summer Cup 2009 Final Standings

1st Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky ($630)
2nd Anton "cooller" Singov ($380)
3rd Fan "Jibo" Zhibo ($250)
4th
Vitaliy "ash" Fedorov ($125)

Grand Final

Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky 2 - 0 Anton "cooller" Singov

(ZTN: 19 - 11)
(ZTN: 10 - 7)

Consolation Final

Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky 1 - 0 Fan "Jibo" Zhibo

(DM6: 24 - 12)

Upper Bracket Final

Anton "cooller" Singov 1 - 0 Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky

(ZTN: 12 - 10)

Lower Bracket Final

Fan "Jibo" Zhibo 1 - 0 Vitaliy "ash" Fedorov

(DM9: 14 - 2)

Should maybe mention that Cypher came from the losers bracket, after losing to Cooller in the initial BO1, he beat him twice in the final itself. All 3 maps were played on ZTN though, sigh. :(
