BASHandSlash release disturbing news regarding MW2 **

** UPDATE
Community Mananger Robert Bowling, better known as "fourzerotwo" has 'replied' to the community via a private message to one of the thousands of people who tweeted, dugg, spammed and harassed him. Could this be the start of IW recognising the PC scene? Only ofcourse if this is a legitimate reply...

* UPDATE

BASHandSlash has released a new version of the webcast, which you can find (HERE). Instead of three hours, this version is just one hour long but still features the most important parts of the discussion.

Earlier today BASHandSlash.com released some disturbing news for all Call of Duty players awaiting the release of Modern Warfare 2, the multiplayer in particular. Although Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling did confirm the game will be released on time, his interview on the BASHandSlash webcast has lead to a massive discussion on the future of the Call of Duty series.

According to the webcast, Infinity Ward are working on a backend called IW.net to make the game more accessible to everyone. As a consequence, it is suggested there will be no dedicated servers and it could also mean there will be no room for Promod, unless IW add it to IW.net.

In addition, VAC will be used as anti-cheat instead of Punkbuster.

Jock Yitch from BASHandSlash.com summarized things as follows:

General
- IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
- GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
- No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
- Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
- DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
- Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.

Clans
- No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
- Listen servers will connect to each other.
- IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin

Competitive Gaming
- Competitive gaming has changed forever.
- It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.

Modding
- Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
- Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.

Below you can find the BASHandSlash webcast. The interview with Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling starts at around 1:38:00.

What the fucking fuck LOL? Give the game a chance to be released before you ruin LMAO. What the fuck are they playing at? The only reason CoD MW 1 was so popular on PC was because of it's hugely popular competitive side. I meen seriously, what the fucks going on?

Who pays these stupid cunts for these GREAT ideas? LOL

Raise stink on the IW/MW2 forums? Chances are the developers will at least see it...Otherwise I think it will be back to COD2/COD4.

The funny thing is, that holds more potential in the long run than CoD4.

I don't actually think I will buy MW2 now. It is as clear as day that the game is truly a public server game for the average gamer who just plays for a couple of hours a night with mates for a laugh.

I always felt CoD was competing against CSS in recent years and this will deffinitely not have a chance of getting anywhere near it.

CoD2 is there to be taken up, anti-cheat is the ONLY problem with the game that can be fixed one way or another.

Unless you can pay them about 30million dollars so its worth their while thinking about the minority in this case (competitive gamers) I suggest you save your efforts and do a petition for updated anti-cheat for CoD2 :}

Cool idea, but realistically if you want a CoD game to rival with CSS or CS in the distant future, the only CoD game that would rival it is CoD4. You switch to CoD2 again and you just show how unstable the community is to bigger organizers...at least with CoD4 youd be showing the community is dedicated to playing 1 CoD game for more than 2 years.

I'm not saying 1 game is better than the other, just stating what I think you'd have to do if you want it to get even bigger of a game competitively.

You say you wana show stability for the CoD community by showing we can play a single game for more than 2 years yet you would have moved to MW2 if IW didn't ruin the competitive scene.

It is fact that CoD2 is by far the best hope for CoD scene and people who even dislike the game must admit that the CoD2 community was so professional and had such a strong backbone pushing the game with the likes of Frijec, Trigger, Mick and Crow. CoD4 has not had that since its early life and the game has had its chance.

The thing is, CoD4 never reached the heights CoD2 did and we could be here all day debating the fact which game should be the competitive CoD game but the fact remains, CoD2 got to WSVG and CoD4 didn't.

CoD2 had a small side game tournament in WSVG. That was it.

CoD4 had more players, more competitions and more prize money than CoD2 by some distance.

Lost all sense of seriousness in discussing this with you when you said CoD2 was bigger competitively than CoD4, if you want to go and wank off to CoD2 then go do it, but don't make up shit. CoD4 has had far more prize money, LANs and players than CoD2, but okay :)

Agree with everything bar that part.

yea true, but you could argue the point that hype really carried CoD4 to its peak.

In terms of how long the games peak lasted, CoD2 had a considerable consistent following and in its dying days, it was still part of WSVG.

My point was... CoD2 reached certain heights CoD4 did not, ie: WSVG (whether it is a side tournament or not, Europe had 3 teams there in America competing)

WSVG was considered a success for the CoD2 community at the time and if CoD4 didn't come along the game would have got bigger without question.

People were not bored of CoD2 because it was CoD2, they were bored of CoD2 because CoD4 was a breath of fresh air, new guns, maps etc. Hype brought CoD4 to its peak and it quickly fell.

Your clutching at straws a little bit there dude!

CoD2 was slow and took a while to get of it's feet. It was at its height when the CoD4 hype killed it but it was hardly "CBA" free.

CoD4 had a big boom then died for 3-4 months for a lot of people. But it then came back argubley stronger (yes the prize money wasn't quite as high, but you had EPS's cropping up all over the shot) than it was before. The summer lans just gone were just as good as last year and the competition was just as intense. If MW2 Wasn't announced then it too would have kept ongoing in the same way CoD2 would have.

CoD4 in it's dieing days still has EPS which is much better than being a WSVG side game is. Not to mention next years AeF and TeX events. On CoD2's side of things, CoD4 hasn't got the fantastic crossfire events which is a HUGE minus.

CoD4 had bigger prize tournaments than the WSVG numerous times, with American teams coming across to Europe on more than 1 occasion, congrats.
