The newly launched Association of Gaming Professionals (AGP) have released details of their upcoming QuakeLive tour which is set to feature twenty four online events. Described as "the first ever international players association in professional gaming", the AGP aims to "sustain the sport... through player legislation, international and regional rankings, and tournament sponsoring and sanctioning".
This season's tour will feature online tournaments running from October to December for the 1v1, CTF and CA game types. These will be run in both Europe and North America with prize pots ranging from $200 up to $1,000 for the pro events. Official rules and map lists are set to be decided by player representitives who will be elected to an AGP council.
Membership costs for the 2009 season have been set at $29.95 and for this you will be "put into the official AGP Rankings system and will be able to participate in all competitions sanctioned by the AGP". It remains to be seen whether this will put off potential participants but the AGP remains confident of bringing in the numbers and have promised possible increases in the prize purses on offer pending further sponsorship deals.
Yeh, something like 5$ would probably be a lot better. Anyone can spare five bucks but it'd still guarantee commitment from the players as money is always money. Then have a higher entrance fees/prizes for the pro players.
I guess it's just another online league aiming too high. If this works they've got to be really lucky.
