With only 32 spots available for the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2009 through both on- and offline qualifiers, the battle for one of the eleven online slots has begun and FIWC organisers FIFA have seen the number of entrants increase by 800%, from 25,000 for the 2008 edition to 225,000 for 2009.
The FIFA organisation offers all FIFA2009 players the chance to qualify for May's FIWC Grand Finals through the FIWC 2009 Online Leaderboard on the PS Network, and a total of 11 players will be given a spot in the Grand Final, distributed as follows:
Europe: The top 5 ranked players
North, Central America and Caribbean: The top 2 ranked players
South America: The top 2 ranked players
Asia: The top 2 ranked players
Africa: The top 1 ranked player
Oceania: The top 1 ranked player
After just missing out on this year's FIFA Interactive World Cup, TEK9's
Vijay Mitrasing is currently right on track in his attempt to secure a spot amongst the 32 FIWC finalists. Vijay currently leads the FIWC Global Leaderboard, followed by friend and teammate
Andries Smit, winner of the FIWC 2006 Grand Final.
The online qualifier however is far from over so both Andries and Vijay will have to give it their best shot to stay on top in the coming months. We'll keep you posted in case there are any serious changes in the global top15.
