ESL have today announced details of the upcoming fifth season of their Major Series which will include a total prize purse of €15,000 spread across thirteen games. Although 1v1 will not be featured due to it's inclusion in the Extreme Masters tournaments, ESL have opted to include 4v4 TDM for QuakeLive.
Last season's Major Series featured Quake 3 1v1 and was won by Serious-Gaming's Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky but this time around ESL will be hoping to draw the attention of team deathmatch fans across Europe with a €1,000 prize purse.
The decision to include TDM as opposed to CTF has been met with some criticism from the community due to the apparent lack of support from developers id Software for the former gametype. A highly successful CTF tournament at Quakecon has only highlighted for many the lack of a proper ruleset and competitive maps for TDM. It is hoped that this could change in future game updates however.
The full list of games set to feature in the fifth season of the ESL Major Series can be seen below.
Counter-Strike: Source (5v5): €4,000 Counter-Strike Female (5v5): €1,500 FIFA 09 (5v5): €1,500 QuakeLive (4v4): €1,000 DotA (5v5): €1,000 Dawn of War 2 (Clanwar): €1,000 Team Fortress 2 (6v6): €1,000 Day of Defeat: Source (6v6): €750 America's Army (4v4): €500 Enemy's Territory (6v6): €500 StarCraft: Brood War (1v1): €750 Trackmania (1v1): €500 FIFA 09 (1v1): €500 Pro Evo Soccer 2009 (1v1): €500
(Note: Call of Duty will not feature in this season's event due to the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)
Signup and qualification details will be announced next week according to ESL.
Now if only the TDM scene wasn't so depressingly harsh to the newbie teams...
