if the carpenter was smarter and had a lot of ambition then he'd do his job really well and therefore have a good income.
after a few years he might have enough to stop his carpenting work and open a hardware store somewhere. There he can use his experience to advise people and he doesn't have to strain his back.

I'd say it's becoming more prominent. Are lives are completely dependant on finance. We do not hunt for our food, territory is bought etc. Also, survival instincts is what we are, that doesn't change no matter what. You eat to survive, you defecate, sleep etc like every other human and I imagine you work, or you're financially supported just the same. We as human have evolved and the games changed.
