Guide to ProMod

Hi there! I just read Newmans thread ( www.tek-9.org/forum/call_of_duty_series-46/call_of_duty_4-13/operation_-_get_them_to_promod-70604.ht
ml?page=4 ) here on Tek and I thought I could do a little guide that will help more beginners to start playing ProMod instead of just CoD4. This could be a nice link to put in descriptions on your youtube fragmovies. If someone can get in touch with the big names, such as HazardCinema and TNM that would be great :)

Patching

Assuming that you've just bought the game and you wish to start playing instantly. You start the game, create your profile, try to join a server, but you get an error saying: "Server is another version...". This is because your game isn't patched.

7 patches have been realesed. However, you will only need to install two of them. The first patch you need to install is 1.6. This patch contains the custom maps that was realesed by IW. If you bought CoD4 GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION you will not need this patch. This is because the game is already patched to 1.6. The next patch you will need to install is patch 1.7. I really don't know what this does but I guess it's just some minor bugfixes.

ProMod

First off, what is ProMod?

Promod is game modification for Call of Duty promoting the competitive side of the game. By covering all aspects of thegame it makes it a enjoyable experience for anyone, with functions for anything from practice and public fun to competitive matchplay and shoutcaster functions. Online or not, our philosophy is to satisfy both those playing and watching the game as a spectator.

Now, how do you install it and start playing? It's simple really. One way you could do it is by joining a ProMod server and the game will download it for you. This isn't necessarily the best way, since a lot of the public servers got custom skins. The other way is to install it manually. Download Promodlive 2.11. This is the latest version and it's used on most servers. Once you have it downloaded, extract it to wherever you want. Then inside the folder there will be some Readme.txt files and two folders. One named promodlive211 and the other one named PB. The PB folder is used if you want to put ProMod on your own server. A player only needs to worry about the promodlive211 folder. Copy the folder and put it in your game mods folder. Usually the path is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Mods
If you cant find your mods folder in the path above try
C:/Users/*windowsusername*/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/ProgramFiles/Activision/CallOfDuty4/

Competitive ProMod

So what does ProMod really do? ProMod makes the game more based on skill rather than luck. The scope sway is removed which makes it more skill than luck. It has removed all the BS, such as grenade-launchers and killstreaks. The guns have been limited and modified. All this to make it more skill based. It also removes the unnecessary objects that exist in the game. Such as dust and other stuff that can make it hard to see the your enemies. ProMod is a totally new experience and is, in my honest opinion, a lot better than the original game.

Skill Clarification

Today, the skills are often abused. People tend to overrate themselves quite a lot. This is not good. It only wastes your time. If you want to join a team which wants players with the skill "High". Don't apply for the team if you're not high. It's only a waste of time.

The main skills that people go after is: Low, Medium, High, Academy and Pre.Invite. I'm going to clarify what each skills really means so that you can easily see what skill you are.

Low Skill : You will be new to playing wars, but not new to gaming. You should be able to hold your own against any other low skill team.

Medium Skill : You will be experienced at playing wars, but you may lack the high skill ability due to your age, or purely from your lack of coordination/game sense.

High Skill : The only difference between a med and a high player will be their level of keeness. Meaning it's more likely they'll know better grenades etc. You will have better game sense and should be able to hold your ground against teams who claims to be High skilled.

Academy Skill : You will be highly skilled at the game. Have participated in multiple online events and ideally some offline too where you have achieved good results. Not necessarily high finishes, but some good wins.
You will be able to hold your own against a pre.invite team and perhaps even beat them in PCW's.

Pre.invite Skill : You should only claim yourself to be Pre.invite skill if you've actually been in a Pre.invite team that has passed the pre.invite acceptance process. Also you should actually have been playing consistently since that time.

Communication
Xfire. Xfire is a chat program similar to MSN and all of those everyday chat programs. The main thing that differs xfire from the other chat programs is that it's used for gaming. Xfire has an ingame interface, meaning that you don't need to tab out when you want to type to someone. It also gives you the ability to take screenshots, record videos and even broadcast live. It's used by almost everyone in the ProMod community and it's a great way to keep in touch with players from all over the world. Head on over to xfire.com to download and register your account now!

mIRC
Let's say that you and a bunch of friends wants to give the competitive side of ProMod a go. What you need to do is download mIRC. mIRC is a chat-program which is used to find PCWs. If you're only planning on going on #cod4.wars I recommend that you use quakenet webchat (http://webchat.quakenet.org/). Once you're on the site you type in your nickname and the channel you want to join. In this case you type in "cod4.wars". Without the quotation marks of course. Once you have joined a channel you search for a game. A typical phrase is "5v5 High server ON". This means that the team searching is a team of 5 and wants to play another team of 5. "High" states that their skill is High. There are three different skills you should go after in the channels. They are LOW, MED and HIGH. "Server ON" means that they have a server you can play on. "Server OFF" means the opposite.

Academy, pre.inv & .inv
These three IRC channels could be seen as divisions. Just like in football. Division one is .invite, division two is pre.inv and division three is Academy. Let's say that you are considered high skilled at ProMod. You think that you and your team can hold your ground and beat some Academy teams in PCWs. You feel like there's no challenge in the #cod.pracc channel. What you can do is apply for the Academy channel. The way you do this is just by collecting screenshots from various academy teams which you have beaten or performed well against. The same procedure works for joining pre.inv as well. Lan experience is a huge plus tho. It always is. The procedure of getting the title of being Invite skilled is different. An Invite team is mostly a LAN team. You will need to have finished at least top 10 at major lan events to even be considered of being Invite. This is nothing you apply to. You get invited to join and therefore its name.
