be careful and take ur time longer is better than a rush to the highest speed just test out a little bit at a time then work from there |

Overclocking is something you always want to do in the bios. Software programs asuch as Rivatuner and Ntuner are not the safest, most effective way to do it.
How far you can push each chip varies as they can all be overclocked to a different speed. In the factory Intel pushes each chip until it fails and that basically determines the speed they are shipped out at.
The best way to overclock is to find a guide on an overclocking website and if possible, a guide to your motherboard bios. Overclocking revolves around increasing the voltage to your CPU to an increased BUT SAFE level. This is the only way you're going to fuck up your hardware, by frying it. Increase it moderately then increase your FSB speed in your bios in small increments. Then let the pc boot up uinto windows. Then run a program such as CPU burn and leave it running for a small amount of time. This will stress your CPU to the MAX to test it's stability at the increased bus speed. If it's stable, go back to the bios and do it again.
Believe it or not, the BSOD is your friend when overclocking. It will let you know when your hardware has had enough. If you get a BSOD, you know your CPU is at it's max and you've reached max overclocking potential.
The biggest consideration when overclocking is your temperatures. If you can get Intel Thermal Analysdis Tool to work in vista (it can be buggy) this will give you a very close reading of your actual temps right from the motherboard. You want to keep this open and watch how hot your cpu is getting. Under max load anywhere up to say 60ish is ok and wont drastically reduce the life of your CPU. Any hotter and you either need to slow down the overclock. reduce the voltage or get better cooling.
This is pretty general guide really. More info can be found in sites such as this:
forums.extremeoverclocking.com/
That's where I learnt how to do mine.

i got mine upto 4ghz, per core but was a lil unstable so its clocked at 3ghz now nice and safe but id suggest getting a better heatsink first |

thats artifacts, thats if you do it too much :b basicly you can just put your settings down, then reboot :).
the thing with rivatuner is to find out when there will be artifacts and locate it, then putting it some bars under to keep stable performance :D |
