By J. Mallalieu and C. Rietbergen

Love it or hate it, the Championship Gaming Series, contrary to what many a 1.6 "fanboy" would have you believe, is here to stay. The "First Professional Gaming League" opened earlier this year to mixed acclaim, with many fearing it to be a corporate and Americanised soap opera meant to dumb down what is essentially an elitist sport. However since the demise of the WSVG and the ever diminishing support for the outspoken CPL, more and more the CGS is becoming an appealing prospect.

The initial premise was a simple one: Bring gaming to the mainstream and in so doing pay a large group of international gamers contracted to the league upwards of $30,000 a year not to mention tournament winnings. Starting off at the playboy mansion (always a good start) six franchises were born, each containing ten gamers from all over North America, and subsequently duked it out on national television to find out who would become the NA champion. Chicago Chimera, taking advantage of the CGS’s somewhat unique scoring system, clinched victory with its top-heavy PGR3 team, and grabbed the first spot in the World Finals. An underrated Carolina Core came a close second, thereby also receiving plain-tickets to LA, where they would compete with franchises from all over the world.

Fast forward a few months and twelve international teams have arrived in America with the sole intention of winning a chunk of the $1,000,000 prize fund and a whole heap of national pride to take home. The World Final is the culmination of a huge global hunt to find the best gamers around, featuring numerous combines, drafts and championships to determine who the lucky few would be.

The CGS, seemingly realising that an American business model would not necessarily work on foreign soil, set about gathering some of esport’s most recognised figures and teams such as 1.6 legend HeatoN, who is now the General Manager for the Stockholm franchise, the Brazilian MiBR and the Chinese wNv. However questions still remain as to whether these old-schoolers will have had enough time to adapt to a new game and take on some of the very best CS:S teams in the world such as former NoA and complexity, who made the switch at the end of 2006.

Personal and national pride is at stake and the spectators are eagerly awaiting the first results of this truly global event. Love it or hate it, one thing is for certain, the CGS World Finals will be an explosive tournament as the competition reaches fever pitch.

actually i'm a huge fan of this format, it's the most professional what esports has to offer nowadays. You know for sure which teams are going to be there, when the event is going to take place (not depending on "how much teams are going to show up? :s") and what is going to happen. Hope there will be more franshises and more games being picked up by the cgs. (yes also 1.6)

:) Indeed. I also start to like the CGS format more and more and more, it just needs way more teams to compete at a 'national' level imo, but I guess that time will come too :)

#23 Sweden GALEN dohfOs 2007-12-11 04:37:11
go go swedes!

would be awsome if cgs would pickup cod4 :<
#24 Netherlands tek9.Quest 2007-12-11 08:02:13
CoD4 will not be a CGS game, as long as they have CSS.

Every 5on5 game will cost them 5x 30.000 dollar.

If there is going to be more games, then i suspect halo 3on3/2on2 or a 1 on 1 FPS game.
#25 Belgium tek9.Sam 2007-12-11 17:23:26

#35 Netherlands tek9.Quest 2007-12-14 09:00:25
Semi Finals - Thursday, December 13th

Chicago 25:17 Birmingham
Chimera 6:12 Salvo
BlackMamba 5:0 Messy
Kasumi Chan 5:1 Ricochet
anomaly 3:1 Bazza
ch0mpr/Jason X 6:3 NeoJake/Daveyskills

Messy messed it up here, i thought he would do better against the WCG champion. Nothing to blame Ricochet, the USA femals are just to good for us. Bazza should have kept the door closed as he did vs me during the UK/EU combine.

Carolina 22:21 Berlin
Core 11:7 Allianz
OffbeatNinja 2:5 The Tactical
Mystik 5:2 Liefje
peekay 0:2 Manya
Rex/PhantoM 4:5 YddrasiL/Finpro

Tactical did very good, liefje managed to get 2 importnat points but Manyna did not score enough goals.

So now we have a USA final.
I just think we need a own league in Europe to give our euro teams more experience.
#36 United Kingdom tek9.nano 2007-12-14 13:23:04
Individual scores for the franchise games are now all up. Was really ul berlin the fifa twins really didnt play to their potential this tourney :(
