Your guide to SEC 2010 - Accomodations

Accomodation
With the event location in the centre of Copenhagen, the possibilities for accomodation are endless. On Booking.com alone there are 95 options to choose from, but I've narrowed it down to 10, ranging from budget to more expensive four star hotels.

Although this list gives you a good idea of the possibilities, I would advice everyone to have a look at sites such as Booking.com or Hotels.com for possibly better deals or locations closer to the event.

The criteria I've used: the hotels should be within 10 minutes walking distance from the event, preferably around 5 minutes. The rating of the hotel (over a decent sample) should be 7.4/7.5 out of 10, or higher.

All prizes are based on three nights, from Thursday the 29th of April until Sunday the 2nd of May. I will add the total cost for a three night stay, using the cheapest double bedroom for each alternative as an example. In addition, I've included the price per person / per night.

The cheapest hotel alternative, regardless of the average rating, is the Absalon Annex, costing €33.60 per person, a night. The best rated hotel in this list (8.3) is the Axel Hotel Guldsmeden, which costs €60.81 per person, a night.

As pointed out by Arachon in the comments, there is also a good (five star) hostel in the area, which is Europe's biggest cityhostel with 1,020 beds.

I could add more options that are on walking distance, but I would advice everyone to have a look at sites such as Booking.com if they are looking for more affordable (or more expensive) alternatives.

Websites to look at
Three sites that might be interesting to look at for foreign teams:

  • Cph.dk (English version) - The official website of the Copenhagen Airport. It provides you with a map, which can be found HERE, to help you find the metro station at the airport.
  • Rejseplanen.dk (English version) - A very informative site to help plan your trip and get you from point A to point B. All you need is the address or even just a telephone number.
  • M.dk (English version) - The English version of the Danish metro. It provides you with a clear map of the Copenhagen metro stations and a timetable.
  • Google Maps - Speaks for itself, but the routeplanner feature does provide you with a nice overview of how to get from one place to another and how much time it will take (by foot or car), if you just fill in the address.

I would hereby like to thank Michel "RB" Nashi, Jamie "z1no" Bachs and Patrick "AagaarD" Aagaard for their help.

Gaming is officially considered a sport in Denmark and at the past TEX events a lot of press was present, so I doubt people will be too surprised. In addition, I'm not sure what the setup will look like, could be very enclosed etc.

not exactly Camiel, eSport has been accepted by DGI - a national umbrella organisation for gymnastics and athletic associations, but eSport has yet to be recognized by DIF (Danish Athletics Association, the major sports association in Denmark), and is not yet supported by the Danish government either.

This is however something being worked on by organisations such as eSport Denmark who are in constant talks with politicians (both major parties have now said that eSport should be a recognized sport) and I think it will be a matter of a few years (fingers crossed) before the Danish government officially recognizes eSport as an actual sport.

As I posted in a forum thread, you might want to consider using the Danhostel Copenhagen City, which is also within walking distance of the venue; a hostel not a hotel, but very new one. www.danhostel.dk/copenhagencity

I have been to Copenhagen about 4 times the last two years and I have always rented a room at Danhostel Copenhagen City. It's a VERY good hostel, and its kinda cheap. I do indeed recommend this hostel.

Can I just say, given I've never attended a CoD4 lan, I'm predominantly a css player, who is now semi-retired and managing a new mgo. This is RIDICULOUSLY good, (effortwise), Literally anything I want to know about SEC is here. Short of you guys taking me there I don't think theres anything I can't do now...

Well done guys. Just a shame I won't be going to this one :)

If you do find time to explore Copenhagen while you are here, there are lots of things you can do to make your trip an even better experience - 10.000€ CoD4 tournament aside (!).

Here are a couple of places to see / things to do:

Tivoli - Copenhagen's famous amusement park in the heart of Cph and literally straight across the street from the SEC location. Rides/rollercoasters, activities and plenty of places to eat (though most of them are quite pricey).
Link: www.tivoli.dk/composite-3351.htm

Christiania - an area in Cph also known as 'Freetown Christiania' and arguably the biggest tourist attraction in the entire city. "Christiania has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971. Its cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004. Since then, measures for normalising the legal status of the community have led to conflicts, and negotiations are ongoing."
Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freetown_Christiania

Canal tour - If the weather is nice, you could also take a canal tour. Obviously a very touristy thing to do, but an enjoyable 60-minute ride if the sun is out, and a unique way to see the city and waterfront sights / sounds.
Link: www.havnerundfart.eu/eng/index.php?page=forside.php

Additional stuff...

'Strøget' - The main walking street through central Cph, plenty of shops if you're looking to buy anything in particular. 2 minutes from SEC.

Movie theatres - If you have a few hours on hand, you can also pop in to one of the 5-6 movie theatres nearby, including Palads which is straight across the street from SEC, or Imperial which is within 2 minutes walking distance and is Denmarks largest theatre (best theatre if you get good seats).

Food - Pretty much every fast food restaurant you can think of is within walking distance from SEC (Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, etc.). Plenty of kebab joints (ask me if you're looking for the best one). Plenty of decent restaurants also, but I know most people are on a budget, so I wont go into details there. There is a Hard Rock Café across the street from SEC that serves a pricey but absolute killer burger - highly recommended! You wont have trouble finding something to eat.

Nightlife - There are basically bars and clubs everywhere in Copenhagen, I wont recommend any of them in particular as it's all a matter of personal preference, but some of the most popular ones are within walking distance from SEC. You need to be 18+ to get into most places.

If there are any teams looking to bootcamp in Copenhagen prior to the event, here are a couple of places you can consider:

Boomtown - www.boomtown.net (literally at the same location as SEC will be held)
InGame Frederiksberg - www.ingame.dk
InGame Amager(CPG) - www.ingame.dk
