The Quoting Machine

Posted by Steven dfb Leunens on 2010-02-04 16:42:54
Quotes, some may love them – some may hate them. I personally love them. Some people can just so elegantly put into words how you feel, think and act. Or at least how you should be feeling, thinking or acting. One sentence can make you put everything into perspective and complete change the way you think about a certain topic. I always have a couple of quotes in the back of my mind to keep me going in the right direction. Quotes that make me stop, think about what I’m doing and perhaps overhaul everything I was doing and tackle it a completely different way. In this article I’ll randomly put quotes that I’ve come across throughout my life and my personal opinion on them. Hopefully among this list you will find some quotes that you can use in your everyday life and use for the better. They can apply to pretty much anything: personal life, work, eSports and gaming, family, ...

"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler" – Albert Einstein

Often people try to overextend themselves and complicate things  for the sake of complicating things. What Einstein realizes is that making something as simple as possible is probably the hardest thing to do and he also speaks of it in another quote of him: “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."

Find those who motivate and captivate you and live by them! Feel free to add your own quotes in the comments section!
“Underpromise, overdeliver”

A great quote for anyone who is in the business of providing a service or product to someone else ( which is virtually anyone). I’ve known this quote for quite some time but it was recently brought to my attention again and I’m using it more and more every day. This is a great way of keeping people happy (such as sponsors) and an ideal way to do business. Give yourself a realistic goal and communicate that with your clients, partners, customers or whatever. When the goals have been communicated properly, all you have to do now is achieve just a little bit more. Trust me, everyone loves it. In fact, you will be more successful if you put your goals slightly lower and manage to achieve and surpass those goals nearly every time.

"The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that is it too low and we reach it" – Michelangelo

This has to be one of my all-time favorite quotes. Simple yet so powerful. I try to live by this quote every day of my life and set the bar higher with every step. There is no shame in missing your targets if you know you did everything you could to achieve those goals but kicking back and doing nothing because your goals are too low is just an easy way out.

“Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently” – Henry Ford

Another brilliant quote by a brilliant man. He understood as no other that every single person makes mistakes. The most successful people in the world have all failed multiple times. Some of the richest people on the planet saw their first two companies they started go bankrupt. Failing isn’t a negative word. It present an opportunity for you to think about what went wrong and try something else. Failure offers knowledge. The more you fail, the more you could potentially learn and the more knowledge you could acquire.  It’s the “could”-part where most people struggle. They see failing as something they need to blame someone for instead of learning from it.

I love quotes, i have loads on my website that i like, won't post them all but here are some of my favourites.

Power is when you have every justification to crush someone, and then you don't

If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.

Thank you. Think about it.

What would happen if people had to get a fully public background check before they were allowed to criticize others ?

(the above quotes were actually from LLCoolJ's twiitter account - no idea if they are his or other peoples quotes)

"The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly kind companion." Thackeray, Vanity Fair

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” Kahil Gibran

“joy and sorrow are inseparable, together they come and when one sits alone with you, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.” Kahil Gibran

Work like you don't need the money, dance like no one is watching, love like you have never been hurt.

But my all time fav is this one - "The greatest part of our happiness, depends on our dispositions, not our circumstances" Martha Washington

No really, that quote is from someone who is both insecure and egotistical - saying something like that comes from someone who is trying to defend the fact that they know they are not widely liked, but try and make out they dont care, when in actual fact they do.

@bakerzji, in theory yeah you're right, but the sentiment behind the statement would never be true, no one wants to be criticised in a negative way (assuming they are not a sociopath, in which case read below).

@Leo A sociopath may well mean something like that, but generally a sociopath doesn't feel the need to justify anything, to anyone, therefore their answer would be far shorter & thus not engender a statement that attempts to justify why they do not care if they are talked about in a good way, or a bad way (in this case "the thing that matter is that they talk about me" would be considered justification). If we assume that the statement is an answer to a question, as opposed to a generalised statement, there is still an attempt at justification. Whenever someone attempts to justify what they are saying, it generally implies that there is a cause for not believing what is being said. Take liars for example, a bad liar will over compensate in their given excuse, in an attempt to make it appear believable, this situation would be the same. Basically, the first part of the sentence is fine, and had it been left at that would be an example coming from a possible sociopath, but the second part of the sentence undermines the sentiment of the first "I DONT care that people talk about me" met with "It MATTERS that people talk about me" that isnt a person who doesn't care what is being said about them, it is two statements completely contradicting each other.

@knaller for someone with such a 'brilliant mind', as has been suggested by others, you sure do come out with some shit sometimes.

well i translated it from french into english so maybe it's loosing a bit of its sens.

But the other way around is : don't lame/flame someone just to make fun of someone because he couldn't care less or he does it in purpose like that people will talk about him !

eg take a look at madonna, britney spears or what ever "stars" who does stupid things in order to get some attention !

One I love: “An error doesn’t become a mistake until one refuses to correct it.” – JFK

Some of the ones that I like because I'm an athiest, but really defines what it is for me:

“Question with boldness the existence of God; because, if there is one, he must more approve of the homage of reason that that of blindfolded fear.” – Thomas Jefferson

“An atheist is a man who has no invisible means of support.” – John Buchan

“I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.” – Richard Dawkins

“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, it doesn’t go away.” – Philip K. Dick

“Truth does not demand belief. Scientists do not join hands every Sunday, singing, ‘Yes, gravity is real! I will have faith! I will be strong! I believe in my heart that what goes up, up, up must come down. Amen!’ If they did that, we would think they were pretty insecure about it.” – Dan Barker
