It was the summer of 06’ when I first touched on broadening my knowledge of the e-sports world. I began to admire how big Counterstrike and Quake stars managed to collaborate among all the members within their tight nit five, and how even through loss after loss; they would stick together, and in the end come out glorious on a number of annual championships. Teams such as the polish Meet Your Maker squad always inspired me in the sense that they were the perfect example for an e-sports team, five players, who are not only world class at what they compete in, but are also characters within a squad that has created a style of its own, one that not only promotes a positive vibe within their game, but produces strong friendships outside of the sport. They have the story behind them, the story that make players like me at the mere age of 15, ponder in fascination. Like any natural kid at the time, I began to imitate the greatness of these professionals, and in this case I attempted to lead my first ever competitive team for Infinity Wards newly released Call of Duty 4. The wish was that I would someday be the leader of the best out there, and be glorious in all of my journeys.
We’re now verging onto the summer of 2010, and I look back on my adventurous Journeys only to see how much I have learnt through each glorified lesson, and ultimately how my wishes were not entirely correct. Call of duty is now picking itself up once again, LAN tournaments are now more frequent then sparse and as a result we are now seeing the progression and questionable creation of these looked upon ‘legendary teams’.
So for that reason alone, I have begun to question, what makes the perfect team? What allows a team to pick themselves up after a devastating loss and learn from their mistakes? Well within this article I shall be addressing these issues that are facing many teams within this pre-lan roster roulette season, and ultimately attempt to shed some light on certain ideas that have been kept within the shadows.
