It's been close to six weeks since the final days of the ButtonBashers Call of Duty 4 lineup, a horror show in Denmark that saw them crash out of TEX in 13th to 16th place, and for Ralph "qwertYYY" Balder it's given him time to reflect. Over those days, in his own words, he was "raging". Now, however, he looks back at those times and admits the team's implosion was something that was always going to happen sooner or later with the players they had.
- The individual talent was the biggest problem. People always thought they were right and wanted to do things their own way, not wanting to listen to teammates and making the communication terrible. I had the feeling people wanted to go for fame rather than winning, doing a four man take down once then failing the rest will give you more fame than killing one or two every round and waiting for backup but the latter is what you need in a team game,. With the players we had no one wanted to do the dirty work like planting bombs, sacrificing themselves, keeping the back and stuff like that.
Balder refuses to pick out any player in particular but is adamant that not everyone was guilty when it came to this. He also says he had made up his mind on leaving the team even before their final lower bracket match at TEX.
- Well I had made my mind up about quitting before the eSuba game started, I didn't feel like the team was for me even though I had a lot of fun with them. Apparently the other players had the same in mind too. So we broke up in good terms.
Happier times
It wasn't so long ago that the nineteen year old from Amsterdam was called up to the team, invited by former TEK9 player Davy Sysmans to fill the final spot in their allstar roster. The side had a reputation for instability but Balder was willing to take a chance to hit the headlines again after a period of inactivity.
- I had never been in a team with Davy and he has been a good friend ever since I started playing Call of Duty so it was a nice opportunity. I didn't really know much about them as I had been out of the scene for quite some time. It was a risk joining but it was fun playing with them from the beginning so I figured I would just see where it would take me.
The team had moved on from SpeedLink due to lack of support and was now playing as four and a half men. Their big chance came when ButtonBashers announced they would be hosting a tournament to select their new team and winning this finally secured their attendance at the summer's major LAN events. Balder admits himself and his teammates were relieved.
- It would have probably been our last chance of getting to the summer events because of the reputation the old team had built up. ButtonBashers is a great organisation so it was an honour to represent them. They arranged a laptop for me to practise on which was great, as it was impossible for me to play with decent fps at home until then.
Despite this the team did end up having a number of issues practicing but Balder claims they were still in good enough shape to pull off a win at OOF or TEX.
- We had to deal with some problems. for example I had shit internet the whole time apparently due to a breach in the cable underground. It ruined a lot of nights we were supposed to be playing. This made us lose a lot of time which we already had little of. This all influenced us of course but us failing to win had other reasons, we had what it took to win.
Well said, people tend to forget that often.
