I hope my previous article, Quake LIVE: Let’s get started, made you curious about Quake LIVE. If so, and you made an account in the meantime, I am sure you are enjoying the game.
In this article I would like to introduce you to maybe the most difficult game type in Quake LIVE, i.e. duel. You don’t have a team to fall back on; if you lose then you can only blame yourself. You will need to master all aspects of the game to be successful. If you fail at even one aspect, the enemy might see that and he will take advantage of that.
That being said, it’s also a satisfactory game type as you will notice improvement after practicing a while.
Timing items might be difficult as you have to think of so many things at once. A little trick that might help: add 30/40 and then deduct 5.
Example
RA pick-up at 0:23 = 23+30 = 53 -5 = Next RA at 0:48
adding 25 is easier than adding 30 and deducting 5 imo :D
yep, once you've got the feeling it's easier (and certainly faster) to do it in one step. Though at the beginning these tiny tricks might be helpful, i think.
at the very beginning i even had this small paper with pickup time and next to it the respawn time ... i know it's lame, but it was very helpful for me at the time :D

haha well yeah that's true, for beginners anything might help a bit
Ye no kidding when you say that map knowledge is important.
Otherwise it'd be fine and dandy but it seems to me that half of the population has been born and raised on dm6. Really starting to hate that map.
What are the main competitive maps in QL then? Is anyone aware of any plans to implement custom maps into the game, like phrantic and those others that were popular in Q4 (I wasn't really into q3a when it was popular so I've no idea what maps are played competitively :S)
if you ever have problem timing items, i know some players who count by tens, :35 -10 -10 -10 -5 = :00 mega :D i tried it and it goes off really fast in your head, but timing items without this method should be the end result of practicing with it.

For a North America cash tournament coming up, the maps are:
dm6, t6, t7, t9, ca2 and t4/dm13(one of those 2 maps are gone) There are enough good new maps to replace MOST of the old maplist.
Example
RA pick-up at 0:23 = 23+30 = 53 -5 = Next RA at 0:48

Anyways, here's a pretty thorough tutorial on strafe jumping and any other form of defrag movement:

I'm thinking they'll make some more maps in the future and host map making contests. Hopefully.
Everyone does :)
