I have with me now one of the UK's biggest LAN going COD4 communities, Deadly Forces. The clan itself have been going strongly since late 2003, where they spread their first roots within the MOH:AA scene, where they were arguably quite successful. From there they moved onto more sunny pastures, the COD series. The clan first attended the I-series during early 2008 at the events first outing to Stoneleigh Park. From here the clan became a regular sight at the event, regularly fielding multiple teams. I managed to take them away from their busy schedule for two minutes to ask them some questions.
Hey chaps, not seen you guys in a few months as you skipped the last event. Mind kicking us of by telling us a bit about the clan and what it's all about, I'd ask for a bit about each of you but there's just too many of you!
We've been awesome since 2003, we've grown involved alongside the games. We started of with Medal of Honor, then progressed onwards into Call of Duty 2. From there we followed the natural progression onto COD4, and that's how DF really started to take off. Since then we started getting into a variety of other games including battlefield and tf2. Currently we are a multi gaming clan, playing minecraft, WoW, Starcraft, Chess, COD4, BF, Portal 2 and TF2.
So, this is what, your 7th event now? I see some faces that I recognize but also some new one's. What is it you think that attracts in these new members, and what do you think makes them want to stay?
Were shit, so highly accessible. We are open to all skill levels, as long as the attitude is 'correct' (busty females preferred). Reason why people stay, because it's all down to attitude. We let our talented birds fly away (Bean: ey up, I'm still here).
What sort of reaction do you get from the new recruits when you tell them your coming for a weekend of gaming and debauchery? Silent recognition maybe? Or perhaps a look of unease when you ask them to come along?
(group discussion). All of our new recruits seem pretty enthusiastic, we've even got a few internationals coming over. Most of them seem enthusiastic, except neil, he seems to thing were all pedophiles, don't know where go got that from.
Have you ever regretted attending a LAN events? I know for a fact there has been a few heated moments derived from pure emotion during some of your games.
I35, it was so very freezing. I regret coming to the event every night when the d***'s are screaming and shouting. But in all fairness, we never regret coming to LAN. It's the people around you, the really young lads who get a bit too excited that tend to ruin things.
In contrast, what is your (as a collective) best memory at the I-Series? Perhaps watching bean bean attempting to go toe to toe with the best? Or maybe watching by as your team mates struggle to pitch their tent in the dark?
I36, 39, i40, who knows! There's so many good events. I36 was a big clan highlight, we had 3 teams, it was insane, we even had droob come over from Denmark. We even sported off our new deadly forces clothing line (see www.deadlyforces.co.uk to buy yours now!).
There has been quite a lot of respect within the community for 'Dad Clans' and community driven organizations as of late. People seem to start to recognize their significance within the scene now that things are starting to slow down a bit, is it nice to receive some recognition?
WE NEVER GET ANY RECOGNITION. We just get flamed no matter where we go. But when we first started, we got some recognition. As times gone onwards attitudes seem to have changed, which is pretty sad really. People mainly seem to know us from our servers, primarily the sniper only server.
In an attempt to try and reel this back towards the event now. At, I think it was the last event, you managed to gain for the first time in your history, entry into the COD4 playoffs. Was this a tribute to your dedication, your improving skill levels or was it simply sheer luck?
No, no, we've done that twice now...it doesn't matter one was by default! Sheer luck, that the other teams were worse. Just want to point it out that we turn up for the community, not the competition, were here for some laughs.
I know that you guys have tried to spread your wings to attempt other games, mainly TF2, but every time it never seems to quite work out for you like COD4 has. That statement could be wrong, simply made from my observations, but if it isn't, why do you keep clinging onto COD series?
It's a good game (groups nods of recognition). It's a brilliant game, some people have got bored of it, but it's still brilliant. TF2 and other game rules were too much of a contrast, we couldn't grasp the rules. It was too much of a difference from medal of honour etc. It's instant action as well, in battlefield it's like 5 minutes running, then die...well it was for us anyhow.
Nearly done now lads. This competition is, like I keep mentioning, quite considerably larger than the past few events. Do you think at least one of your teams will be getting into the playoffs again? And if not, why?
I think we have a reasonable chance, as long as we have a decent group. Were hoping (praying, bribeing) our way to a comfortable draw. For the record though, the fun team usually get further....FACT. If we don't get through, the REG is terrible and and we just got constant FPS lag. ^_*
It's been a pleasure seeing you guys again. Good luck in the competition and do you have anything that you would like to add?
Hello to memia clan! Thanks to all those that used to come on our servers and good luck to all teams that are entering.
You can see the team later live from insomnia42 playing within the group stages!
