How to use YouTube Insight to Maximize Fragmovie Visibility
Written by Netherlands Tijs Cruysen

NOTE: All images have been scaled down to fit the size of the TEK9 site. If you want to view them in full resolution, open a new window with the link to picture.

There are plenty of websites where you can upload your Fragmovie and show it off to the crowd. After this publishing step you would like to generate as many views possible and there are various options for promotion available. You might want to base these upon facts and statistics. YouTube has a very powerful tool for this, called “YouTube Insight”. These pages are full with detailed reports and statistics that generate a lot of data. Now the real question is, what data exactly is relevant and how can you use it to your advantage to maximize views for your productions? In my example I will be using one of my own movies which has generated near 50k views, enough to exclude random numbers.

The First steps
First login to Youtube and go to My Account -> Youtube Insight. There you will find all your posted videos and the comparison between each other. Select one of your videos to proceed to the ‘views’ dashboard.

Figure 1 - Hover over 'My Account' to reveal the link or click on the envelope in the third column.

When and where is my video popular?

Figure 2 - The 'Views' screen of a selected video.

On the right side you will find the relative popularity graph. This graph can be used to interpret the popularity over a certain amount of time. When set to daily views it will generate the exact amount of visitors and the possibility to show only unique visitors. In my example I zoomed in to the release date. Here you can clearly see the peak in visitors after the launch of the video and two smaller peaks after two e-mail campaigns where we send out news releases to various e-sports websites. With this graph you can very precisely determine the results of specific promotions, whether it is forum spamming, news releases, a featured item on a gaming website etc.

The top right world overlay is the graphical representation of the bottom table; visualizing where your fragmovie is most seen. This movie featured a Hungarian player, explaining the relatively high ranking of Hungary. When you click on a country the top view if filtered with only the numbers for that particular country. This function is only available for ‘relative popularity’. One example when I found this useful was when a friend offered me to write a news post about the movie in German around May and post it on one of the largest German e-sports websites. Other German media picked it up from there and the peak can now be explained.

Figure 3 - Germany selected in relative popularity, the press release in German generated more views than the English one upon release.

How people find your video

How are people finding my video? After the initial posting on Tek-9 cinema, Wipido and YouTube you will find that over time there are more visitors being generated from both search queries as related videos. We will click on the “Youtube search” to see the exact search keywords.

In this detailed view you will find the most common search phrases fragmovie searchers are looking for. I renamed the movie in April to include the most used keywords and rewrote the tags in the description as well. I can now clearly see this fine-tuning has lead to getting nearly double as much as exposure as it used to be. The successful tags on the other pages are the ones which I found all the time in my other statistics as well; davy, mick, Diablo, esuba, luckr and mintr. If you put those tags in both description as separate tags it will instantly boost hits.

The demographics screen is pretty logical; no need to explain only a fraction of your visitors will be female and the largest age group are those under 25. The community screen doesn’t offer very much useful information as well. It will only tell you the percentages of visitors who engage with your video, either posting a comment, video response or rating it.

Hot Spots!
Now this is the cool stuff. This is where the real power of YouTube joins in. This graph shows exactly on the timeline where your video rocks and where it sucks.

You can drag the bar on the video and it will move the bar on the left timeline so you will know exactly the good and bad parts of your movie. You can also just play and watch the line with the movie go. As you might have seen this movie, the intro generates certain expectations and most viewers will stick to watch even after the climax has been reached. I made a slow build up with the "Odyx" part and here I can clearly see this has lost me quite some audience. The aerial effect got people back into the video though and made them watch through the end.

This screen is highly useful for yourself as a producer to improve your movies and know what the people want and what they don’t, without need to skim through hundreds of individual comments.

With these tools I hope I have been able to give you a quick introduction to the “Insight” section of Youtube and how to use it to your advantage.

lol had the basics for the article already just never finished it off.
@special_k, it happens after uploading and before the conversion process. it will run the wave through their database and tries to find matches. sometimes just a 1% pitch will do.

and thanks jetset+dfb for posting/image resizing etc :P
