page 6: His team and the CGS

2007 was also the year of “zet”. After taking the matter to court, he was allowed to come over to the USA where he joined up with his fellow team mates. How did the integration go? Were there any problems language-wise, cultural differences, …?

Marcus is an amazing player and person. He fit in immediately and we’re very lucky to have him. There were never any problems whatsoever.

How happy have you been with Marcus’ performance throughout the year? Was it worth it :)?

Yes, it was definitely worth it. Marcus is a perfect fit.

Will Marcus be playing for LA Complexity in 2008?

The draft is coming soon, so you’ll have to tune in to see!  ;)

As a manager you need to encourage all your players to do better and better but a manager always needs to be able to be honest and see and speak about the negative aspects of his players. LA Complexity missed the CGS World Final by a small margin. Some of the team’s ranks didn’t do that well in competition while we saw other franchises picking up points match after match because of some strong player drafts. Do you feel that you made any mistakes while choosing you team?

Yes, I think I drafted Belle one year too early, and that was my fault. I do think she’s going to surprise a lot of people at this year’s Combine however.

Who in your opinion delivered the most and who gave the least to LA Complexity in the 2007 season?

Our CS team delivered the most and our DOA4 team the least in the previous season.

LA Complexity won the Individual CSS Championship of the CGS at the World Finals. What value does this award have for you and your team? Do you consider them as the best?

Yes, in my opinion our CS:S team is the best in the world, but that can change fast if we get lazy or complacent.

Will we see a lot of changes in the team for the upcoming 2008 season?

Yes, you can expect a lot of changes.

How will you try and manage to reach the World Finals this year and maybe even take a shot at the first place finish?

I’ve been preparing for the 2008 Draft for months now, and expect to do much better.  First place is our goal, and we’re on a mission to accomplish just that.

The 15th of January you announced that you will continue working as the GM for LA Complexity and that you “rededicated yourself to making your gaming family the most successful brand in history”. First of all who did you speak to in your decision making process?

Mainly my wife, but also friends and CGS management.

What were the most important conversations about?

I wanted to be sure this was the best thing for my family and the best thing for compLexity. Now that I made the decision, I’m back 110% and working harder than ever. I think our website and programs like compLexiTV (4 weekly live shows) proves that.

Who or what convinced you to keep on going in the end?

I love gaming, and with the blessing of my wife I was thrilled to lead compLexity at least one more year.

Concerning the CGS, a new season has been announced and games will soon follow, but what games, in your opinion should be included and deleted from the list?

I’d like to see Halo3 included, but don’t know what the game list will be just yet. The information is set to be released very soon however.

Do you believe that the CGS format, like it is been played in North America with 6 franchises who battle it out for the spots in the world finals, can be successful in Europe?

I’m not a huge fan of the speedy format, but we need to do what it takes to make CS more TV friendly.  We simply can’t have 45 minute matches on live television.

Do you believe that CGS should work together with the "established" teams in order to bring in more "fans" and, in general, enlarge the project so instead of founding teams everywhere, do the same they did in the USA taking in Complexity and Team 3D? (Approaching SK, Fnatic, …)

Yes, I think CGS should continue to work with the eSports leaders from around the world. They’ve done their best to do that, and I believe they will continue doing it.

Do you think this would be doable?

Yes, CGS has spoken with G7 representatives, and it’s my hope the two organizations maintain a long and friendly relationship.

Where do you see the CGS in a couple of years?

Bigger and better than anyone can imagine!

I think he answered pretty good, if u see how many closed questions are stated he just could've answered with "yes" or "no"

good interview

Really not that interested on the CGS as a whole though. Computer games will always be more interesting for the user. The idea of watching a console/pc game being played by some other people will always be boring in my eyes.
I find it interesting that Lake mentions that a "45" minute game is not acceptable on live television, yet people who watch SPORTS can watch 90 minutes of a game of football, 80 minutes of Rugby, 4 quarters of American Football and Basketball, including all the in-between match analysis.

He seems like a true fan of esports and the fact he carried his team on his shoulders without the big sponsors and still managed to get them to the top is amazing, great manager.

Every place you put soul and hard work will pay off, hes an example of that.

Its good that gaming is evolving so fast, but its affecting your life. Real job > gaming!
#35 Netherlands vodka 2008-02-10 00:40:06
real job / life / school etc etc should >> gaming but i guess in 75% of the serious gamers situations its the other way around
