page 3: Check-Six

Over to the main topic: Check Six Gaming. When did you establish Check Six, from where did you get the idea and what is all the history behind it ?
Check Six has been around for almost 3 years now. I founded the team back in June of 2003. I was an Americas Army player (yes laugh it up :D) and several of us that were playing wanted to start a new team. One night while playing and thinking of team name's somehow we came up with this and decided to give it a go. We stayed as an Americas Army team for about 6 months, then branched off to our first game Call of Duty, after that picking up an ut2k4 team, and then going to Counter Strike. And now here we are with a Counterstrike 1.6 team, Quake 4 team and a Call of Duty 2 team.

Before I actually go into the current teams you have. Last year we saw Check Six recruiting u96d, the top Enemy Territory team which is now a part of idle.ee. The main reason for this was to give them a chance to go to Quakecon.
They did well, they even won the event together with a nice amount of money. Where did the idea come from, how did you guys get in contact with this team and what are your feelings about that now ?
When Quakecon announced the ET tournament, we were interested in having an ET team for the event. As we were not familiar with the teams and the community, we stayed away from looking for a team. After several weeks we had many teams approach us on becoming the ET division. The manager of the u96d.et team approached us and wanted to become our ET team for the event. After doing some research and talking to them, we felt that was the best move for us. After the event the team wanted to go back to its roots and play for an Estonian team. It was a fun time while they were with us and are a great bunch of guys and I have no regrets of picking up the ET team.

It was indeed a very nice pickup for that event and at that time I must admit. Let’s go over to the Call of Duty 2 division of Check Six Gaming. As TeK-9 Networks is mostly known for its COD squad this is a very interesting point to dig into. Can you tell us something about the team, the players, the objectives and the leagues they are attending ?
The team is fairly new to the organisation. The players are Buffalo, who is a former pandemic player, Carter who has been with the organisation for a while wtih past cod teams such as (zex, u5), 2legit2quit was on the old x6.cod team along with slobbit, Midas and p8nt are on the team as well. The team is going to play in the CAL league, and the upcoming GGL league as well.

As it is mostly very difficult for USA teams to compare themselves with European teams and vice versa (if they are not attending events together) but how well do you think your COD2 team would score here in Europe ?
That's a tough question to answer as I am not to familiar with the Europe COD scene. But if I could take a guess, I’m sure they would dominate the scene :P just kidding. But in all seriousness, No idea. I know the Europe COD scene is a tough one, but I would like to see how they would stack up against the competition.

Quake4, the game everyone has been looking out for the past few months is finely their and already gave us some very nice matches at some well-known events such as CPL and Dreamhack so far. Could you start off by introducing the Check Six Q4 team and tell us something about their objectives?
Sure, the team currently consists of: cha0ticz, destrukt, cl0ck and elpajuo. They currently compete in the GGL Americup series and will be going to the CPL World Tour 2006 stops.

Will we see the 4 of them competing in every CPL stop together ?
You will probably see chaoticz, clock and DKT at all the events. Elpajuo will be at the stops that he can attend depending on his school schedule.

With the Quake4 scene being a big scene with lots of competition, but keeping in mind that chaoticz and clock for example already have a nice history as a dueller/gamer. How well do you think they will be able to perform this year ?
I think everyone on the team has a great shot of placing well at every event they attend. The Q4 competition will be great this year and will provide us some great matches against everyone that is competing.

The last squad currently playing under the Check Six name has just been signed. Rumours all over the place and the treads probably have been rising on forums since: Check Six goes Sweden !!! Top players from Sweden, creating yet another top CS 1.6 team consisting of Swedish players only, signed by an American organisation. Wauw !!! Tell us all about it, please. Where did the idea come from? How did you first get in touch with them ? Who are they ? The objectives and the support ?
The idea came from the obvious talent pool and the accomplishments European teams have continuously brought to the table event after event. So of course the obvious choice for us was to go after some players who were free agents in the market. The players are speedi, red, draken, zaki, strikke. They all currently reside in Sweden of course. Objectives are to compete in the 2006 tournaments and anything else that may come up in the year.

As you and the rest of Check Six are American and with the Counterstrike team being Swedish how do you solve the problem that "may" occur regarding communication. How do you evaluate the team’s results, needs, problems, ... any kind of situation?
As of right now, we are all able to communicate very well through IRC, msn, email etc. Depending on what comes up for myself, I may be possibly moving to Europe and opening up a office there to take care of them and some upcoming things going on for the team as well. With their sleep schedule that they are on right now, it’s very easy for me to get in touch with the players and vice versa.

Could you give us a little insight on those plans or could you just give us a little tip to make us even more curious ?
Hehe, wish I could. If I did then it would take the surprise away from when it actually happens :)Once a manager, always a manager !!! :)

Speaking of managers and management. What about you. What is your "main function" in Check Six.
Basically, I handle player relations, make sure everything is going ok with the players/teams day in and day out. Figure out what events are coming up and what events to get the players too. Also deal with any upcoming ideas or new teams that we may be looking at or expanding. As a new role, I am going to have to take up learning Swedish with having the new guys on the team, so that will be fun. :)

As Check Six has a top CS team, Quake4 players ready for CPL etc, there must be a nice amount of money involved to support all these players. How does the rest of the management fit in this ? Do you all have your specific tasks or do you mostly all work as a real team to establish a goal such as new sponsors ?
Not 1 person has a specific task. We all work together to make things operate smoothly and quickly. It keeps us on our toes and also brings us closer as a management team and a close friendship level.

What are, in your opinion, the most important factors that make a good management?
Able to work in a group, being open minded, being patient, and developing a friendship within the group.

As we both know: getting sponsors or partnerships isn't an easy thing to do. What is the key to success for getting new sponsors? A good presentation, good team results, media, ... ? all off these are of course the best but if you need to pick 1 or 2.
Good presentation and a good team. Having a professional presentation to present to a company is a huge factor when it comes to getting any kind of support for your team. Along with that you need results from your team to show the companies that you are providing results for them and showing them that what they support you with is well worth it.

When we look around we can see that almost daily new clans are getting formed, a few of them survive, some of them become bigger and only a few of them are able to reach the top. What tips or hints would you give to starting clanleaders/managers? Let's say you right a column about it titled: “Creating and forming a gaming organisation in five steps by Rich Howard”, hat would those 5 steps be ?
First tip I could give anyone is be patient. You have to be patient during this process. This is something that doesn’t happen overnight and certainly doesn’t happen within a month either. To build something you are proud of takes time and patience.

Next I would say, find one or two more guys who have the same vision as you to help you on the journey you are about to take on. To build something by yourself is one big hassle to take on for 1 person. I suggest getting someone you trust and know that they will be with you through the hard times and good times.

Don’t start too big and stretch yourself to thin. Start small with one team and build off that. Don’t get ahead of yourself.

Also make sure going into building a team that you want, that you have some sort of funds to help support the team you want to build. Being that is some money for flights or hotels or whatever. Make sure you have some kind of financial backing going into this.

Last but not least: Have a goal that you want to reach. Set goals for yourself to reach every so often so that you keep on striving to perform and making everything better then it can be. Basically have a gameplan, without a gameplan you are lost.

Everlan just ended. Two of your Q4 players have participated in the Q4 competition. They both ended 1st and 2nd. Probably not the greatest competition around but I guess a good training and motivation to do even better. How did the trip go ?
The trip to Denver is always great. The scenery out there is amazing near the mountains. It was a short trip, but always fun. Was a well run event by Everlan and thanks to ATI for sponsoring it, or it wouldn’t have happened.

Before we actually started this interview you told me where you got your excellent video card from and the Soundblaster X-Fi soundcard. Could you tell the readers the story and how you got it ?
Well, I didn’t actually win it. Clock won the soundcard in the Creative Q4 shootout and gave me the card since I'm needing to rebuild my computer and destrukt won the video card by placing 2nd in the tourney. He had a better card and decided to give me the one he won. So overall I came out pretty good :) That's a real example of players with a heart for their managers :) They really want to make it to every CPL Stop for sure... now you can't refuse them anything anymore but as we had this on a little note aside ...

Team3D quit CS 1.6 lately (just temporary of course) to get into CS Source. They won against the American CSS powerhouse "PowersGaming". What are your thoughts about the future of Counterstrike 1.6 compared to Counterstrike Source?
The 1.6 run has been great, and I am surprised it is still alive to be honest. The competition is great on it and is amazing to watch some of the game play. I’m glad CPL made 1.6 the team game as I don’t think Source is ready for that just yet. It still has some tweaks that need to be done to it and what not. But I’m sure after this World Tour we will see Source come into play as the mainstream game.

If the CPL chooses Source as the 2007 team game. Do you think the current top 1.6 teams will quit or switch to Source and how well do you think that they will be able to make the switch ?
I’m sure they will make the switch. And I’m sure the results will be the same as 1.6. The current top teams will still be on top.
