page 3: Clanbase

Let’s use this opportunity to go to the next subject for real. You just said you work rather hard for Clanbase. I think everybody knows what ClanBase is and does but I’m rather certain we don’t know everything. Could you give us the total idea of “What is ClanBase” ?
We host tournaments for any online game out there that are looking for a place to play. Not just for the die hard gamers but also the average gamer. We're also more than just a league. We're also more than only a league. On CB you may find gaming news, your own clanpage, private ladders, various means of communication such as forums, comments and blogs. We want to bring gamers together.
A total package for gamers young and old, good and bad then. Now where in all this, does Mister Killerman fit in ? What do you do ? You work a full time job for ClanBase so I guess there is a big load of work that has to be done. Could you give us an insight on the various aspects of your job ?
Right now I spent a lot of time in development. Which takes up a lot of my CB time. Thus I spent a lot of time on introducing new projects and new features to ClanBase. One of which will be introduced soon and will be very easy and fun for the casual gamers. I also spent my time on making sure other projects are running fine ofcourse. But ClanBase management has grown a lot lately which allows me to spent more time on new projects. I spent a lot of time taking care of gaming operations on CB too. That often reaches its peak close to a LAN final. But it's a lot of fun setting up one and seeing that come together.
So basically the organisation of let’s say EuroCup LAN finals is mostly your job ? Tell us a bit more about that please.
You have to make sure to make the right setup for everyone. The tournament layout and schedule; keeping a tight schedule but at the same time have room for delay. Smaller details such as cups, t-shirts, accomodation arrangements, banners, posters, rules and much more less obvious work. It's a huge job; but possibly also the most rewarding job. Seeing one come together and both players AND admins enjoying it is fantastic.
When can we expect another EuroCup with LAN Finals attached to it because I sense that a lot of gamers are awaiting the next LAN ?
I can't tell you the details yet but we'll be back in full again in the upcoming season. The reason for leaving out LAN finals and prizemoney this season is because those things take time to organise. Which was causing a lot of necessary delays. A lot of users were unhappy about that fact; so we decided to do one season without to get back to our orginal cupscheduling everyone was happy with. That allowed us to take care of much for next season in advance. Which again will allow us sooner to organise the season after. And that hopefully will ensure us getting rid of delays once and for all.
Next to organising the LAN finals you are also occupied with new projects. Can you explain one of the projects you have worked out and are allready active on Clanbase ?
I think the project worth mentioning the most has been more effective measures against cheating. Instead of killing an account they are now being suspended. Meaning the account will remain but will be flagged and that player will not be allowed to play during his suspension. This effectivly makes it harder for banned players to create a new account. Together with a suspension their GUID’s, email and other information is locked and can not be used on another account. For admins it makes it easier to recognise newly created accounts by those players too. Since all the information will remain intact. That and other methods has effectively increased our anti-cheating efforts massivly.
You also said one of your new projects will be announced soon. Could you give us a little inside information about what it is going to be ?
I don't want to spoil the details yet. But let’s say people who like playing a few competitive matches quickly on an evening will be very much accompanied by this.
I think people are still thinking: “He works fulltime for ClanBase, well ok, but does this pay off ?” Do you get paid a real salary for your hard work and in which category can we situate that ?
I can make a fine living. Possibly somewhat less than a fulltime job in an office here somewhere. But I love what I'm doing now and there are lots of other advantages too. So I'm definately not complaining.
Do you see yourself doing this for lots of years more to come ?
I can see myself doing this for a longer period of time - because I like what I'm doing now a lot. It's hard to say whether I will be or won't be though - you never know what the future brings.
Where does your salary come from ? Who pays you ? Is it ClanBase, GGL or another “mothercompany” ?
My salary comes from Professional Interactive Entertainment (PIE). Which is the "mothercompany" of GGL and ClanBase.
A few years ago ClanBase merged with its American equivalent GGL. Before that ClanBase was working alone if I’m not mistaking. What, in your opinion, are the most positive elements that came with this action and what, if you can name any, are slightly negative ?
Ever since the merge with GGL our resources have grown massively. Before we did not have anyone actually working for CB. Now we have fulltime coders, project managers, LAN finals, prizemoney and more. All things that weren't possible before the takeover. Ofcourse getting more resources means CB had to become a little more commercial than it was before. So that might be a slight negative effect. However in my believe those changes have been hardly noticable for users and aren't anywhere near disturbing.
Do you need to travel to the States sometimes or somewhere else in name of ClanBase or GGL ?
I have travelled to different countries for the LAN finals as well as to New York for the Transatlantic Showdown. But other than that, not yet no. Except for having travelled to Amsterdam a few times to meet up with a few people. I might be going to Denmark for a short period in the future to get some work done in an office there.
