page 3: Xleague TV / Gaming

Speaking of TV, how are you finding things working on Xleague TV?
TosspoT: Xleague is going brilliantly, I really subscribe to what they're trying to achieve and I'd like to be involved with that as much as I can. They've recently concluded their Call of Duty 2 tournament which went really well, there were some exciting matches and as far as I know there’s a Call of Duty 4 tournament likely to come so I think they can play a big role for new and developing games. The fact that there are organisations out there pushing new games is only going to help them develop, just compare it to the original Call of Duty, I can’t remember that being on TV? Or at least to the extent that Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4 have been on Xleague, so it’s only ever a good thing.

Do you find it weird that you're actually on television which is being broadcast to thousands over the UK? More to the point Xleague TV is a whole new milestone reached for eSports, do you think this idea will grow around the UK and other countries around the world where it will come to a point one day where there are maybe 20 or more channels dedicated to gaming in one country alone?
TosspoT: I think they're setting the pace and they will have the challenge of learning what could be hard lessons to do with gaming, at the same time because they're one of the first they'll also reap the rewards! In Asia each nation already has several channels for gaming and in Europe it’s starting to get there. So things are certainly moving that way, television is crucial in making people believe that this is actually a target able demographic, which results in money, which results in more pro gamers. Let’s also not forget that the CGS this year made some 150 pro gamers? And then probably another 50 staff associated to gaming. So really you're talking about gaming evolving courtesy of TV, we need it to evolve and grow and make those prize pots support peoples living. These next 12 to 18 months may just make or break eSports for this generation of gamers.

The CGS calls up Stuart
On that note of attracting more pro gamers, I tuned into watch the Call of Duty 4 360 beta match the other night on Xleague TV. Apart from the regular male players that were present, I also saw one female gamer who was actually the best there. As well as this I have seen various women also on the channel. As well as this, I read the ESWC talking about their Counter Strike 1.6 female tournament. What is your view on the world of female gamers? Do you think it is ever-growing?
TosspoT: Its simple, ESWC put that tournament there because they know that women bring cameras. As I said earlier, cameras and TV are good for gaming, because the end result is that they bring money. So all in all gaming needs girls, at the same point though I've not a great deal of respect for females who don’t play in both male and female tournaments because I don’t see there being a great deal of limitations for them. Whilst keeping on the TV subject, you cant deny that as attractive as say zEm or Davy are to women, some hot girl playing games will keep a predominantly male audience watching even if they don’t like the game.

Back to Xleague TV now, do you think it will bring a bright future to eSports in terms of catching on? Do you think more television channels and eSports interest will come out of this one channel in the UK?
TosspoT: The UK needs a beacon, we've some excellent people and some excellent talent who can achieve a great deal in gaming right now but we're not. Xleague can be that beacon and show everyone what is out there, and I think they've really started to do so. Not only their show the Match, but a variety of their content, shows like Inside Gaming also offers what is quite an important glance into what is happening. I remember what Ray Mia the Channel head at Xleague said to me whilst I was semi drunk, "People keep saying gaming is going to explode and hit the big time, when in fact Halo 2 on its weekend of release out grossed The Incredibles, just imagine what Halo 3 will do" and sure enough he was spot on and Halo 3 became the biggest media release ever, that point though is not only applicable to proving that they've got their finger on the pulse, but also in the fact that there are dedicated shows and magazines to movie stars and movies which is almost as diverse as gaming, so just imagine what could come for gaming? The biggest challenge is making something that my housemate will watch for example. I spent two hours playing Pro Evolution Soccer with him tonight, he is a gamer but he won’t admit it, to him I'm a gamer (and a geek) because I'm on IRC and I take the competition seriously. Well...if I beat him, he gets 'Pro Evolution Soccer rage' so damned right he takes it seriously, somehow, someone has to make a show for him and the millions like him.

Its a nice article and of course, Stu is a great guy, however I would like some alterations made to this introduction.

You may think this is being picky, however it is important to ensure people are not in anyway misled.

Stuart does NOT work for Xleague and neither do I, in fact none of the people who work for QuadV work for Xleague. Xleague hire our commentators on a show by show basis, much like a talent agency and the people they hire do NOT work for them, they work for QuadV and are loaned out. The two companies, whilst having a great relationship, are NOT in any way joined together, either financially or otherwise.

Furthermore, it is innacurate to describe QuadV as "online". We are an Internet broadcaster and have several other functions such as full production services, talent loaning, presentations, documentaries and event coverage. Further, QuadV is a Limited company registered in England and Wales and Stuart is a Company Director along with myself, Joe and Oliver.
