The Outsider Countries of Call of Duty 2

page 1: Introduction

Most articles are always about same old top teams like Dignitas, Logitech and Tek-9, but what about the countries where the Call of Duty 2 community is less developed. In this article I will dig a bit deeper how the cod2 community has established itself in countries like Ukraine, Bulgaria, Iceland and a few others, including interviews with the best teams of those countries. Few of you might not appreciate this article because of the lower status of these clans, but I hope some of you will find the time to read and enjoy it.

The Countries

To kick off, I will discuss Bulgaria, as the first country. Although many Bulgarian clans aren’t active in the Clanbase ladder besides man1a-gaming, there is another online competition: the BCCL ( The Bulgarian Call of Duty 2 Champions League ) organized by ESL. This competition even had LAN finals, which became the most important offline event of Bulgaria: man1a eventually won the finals against vicious Gaming with 11-6 and 11-9.

How about the Viking community of Iceland? Not much is known from this country but there are 2 decent teams: team-dedication, the Icelandic number 1 clan and team eCCo, dedication’s rival. The cod2 scene in Iceland isn’t big and there are hardly any LANs. The competition between the Icelandic teams is minimal, just some online cups organized by the Icelandic clans themselves.
 Most important Icelandic clans:

team-dedication
eccoteam
5
Adios
MSI.cod

One of the smallest country in the scene and most likely unknown to you is Ukraine , except for 1 player with Ukrainian roots ( hi knaller ). As far as I know, there is only 1 decent team: team eXplosive. They are the only active Ukrainian team on Clanbase and I doubt that the other Ukrainian clans are on the same level as them. Most important Ukrainian clans:

team eXplosive
NoName
KFFMVDV

Next in line is Latvia: a country which contains about 10 teams. This makes Latvia one of the smallest countries in the cod2 community. Because there aren’t many teams, the competition is very weak as well: besides an online LVcup and a LAN each year, there’s nothing more. So Latvian clans are kind of forced to seek the competition elsewhere and that’s why the most of them are competing in the European ClanBase ladders and the OpenCup.
 Most important Latvian clans:

mindGyver
unDestroyable
URLAS
baltgames

Although the name Croatia might not ring a bell with you when we talk about cod2, their community is rather big compared to the other countries. According to the octane players at least 1 LAN a month is organized, but there’s also a lot of online competition. Just recently ClanBase has added a Croatian regional Call of Duty 2 ladder and already 21 clans are signed up, trying to take the Croatian throne from octane.esports.

Most important Croatian clans:

octan
e
gumi
crazy warriors
g2top

Estonia got known in Call of Duty 2 because of the sudden rise of Team Aquila featuring players like Darvidaz, Nugiro and spez who were all part of the Estonian National team as well. But sadly this team folded, although it had a bright future ahead. Most of it’s players aren’t really active anymore except for zewaz who now plays for team Random-gaming, the best Estonian clan at the moment. Since this team is pretty fresh, it will take some time until they can reach the level Aquila once had. But the future looks good for this country, since more and more clans are coming. But will Estonia become the powerhouse in Call of Duty 2 like it is in Enemy Territory?
 Most important Estonian clans:

Random gaming
EMPHASIZE
jungs
Benedictus XVI Hedgehog

A country so big as Russia must have a big community too, which it indeed has. The total amount of competitive clans is estimated around 100, taking part in various online competitions and Russian LANs. For the online competition Russia has the PROCOD and BeFirst cups but also a few national leagues like Cod Master League and ICL . If that isn’t enough a lot of Russians are also active in the ClanBase ladders and Opencup. Offline their scene is very active as well with much LANs held in Moscow, recently there was one which was won by Empire.cod2.
 Most important Russian clans:

Empire.cod2
|CF|
prime
silence

The sunny Greece is not really developed in the world of games: it has little success in Counterstrike, Warcraft3. And it’s the same story when it comes to Call of Duty 2. In CoD1, Greece had a team called #non.cod with players such as BriZolaS and BaTMaN. These guys continued playing in Call of Duty 2, they even teamed up with the Dutch player dramzie but that didn’t last very long. Greece counts about 16 average Call of Duty 2 teams and about 3-4 of them are pretty decent. The offline scene in Greece is decent and it’s still improving: last year there were 3 LANs organized for CoD2. Online there’s pretty much nothing except some one-night cups. That’s why some of the Greek teams search for competition in international Cups & Leagues like ClanBase.
 Most important Greek clans:

2 THE RESCUE222
team iX

During my “investigation time” on ClanBase to see if there were actually any Romanian clans, I was surprised by the rather big amount of Romanian clans.  The most known clans from Romania are Maniacii and ArchFurious, competing in the OpenCup 2nd Division League 2. Also the Romanians hold national cups like Blitzkrieg, with a rising number of clans every edition. Next to that there’s also a cooperation between the Community from Romania and ESL. Although online the competition is pretty decent, the LAN scene is not: from the start of cod2 only 2 LANs have been organized. What I found interesting as well is that the Romanians always try to get better and better by adding skilled people from other countries like Germany, instead of keeping it National.
 Most important Romanian clans:

Maniacii
Arhanghelii
ArchFurious
A6
cZone

Does a tiny island like Malta even have any CoD2 players? For the size of the country, Malta sure has a lot of players, of who the most are active on the ClanBase ladders. Some months ago there was a showmatch from Dignitas versus the best Maltese clan “ sMu ” who were playing in a cybercafé with a few hundred spectators. Of course Dignitas won but still! About 20 Maltese clans are competing in the ClanBase ladders but probably there are a few more than those. According to BioH@zArd from sMu, only 100 to 200 play Call of Duty 2 in Malta.
 Most important Maltese clans:

sMu
eXosphere
sas
ephica

And last but not least we have Bosnia Herzegovina, the country with the horrible spelling! One of the only decent Bosnian teams is e-headhunters with 2 players of the national Bosnian team: L3V and lioNNel. But there is one other player who plays at a high level namely roycolt from wAve-gaming (which is formerly known as Rhenium-gaming). The competition, LAN and online, is rather poor: there hasn’t been one decent LAN in Bosnia so far, except a Deathmatch  LAN where all players competed versus eachother in 1 versus 1 matches.
 Most important Bosnian clans:

e-headhunters
former dragons squad
OLDies
Sultans of Bash
