page 3: Dr. Murray interview

The Psychologists (or psychiatrists) This is from an edited interview with Dr Robin Murray, Head of Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry London. Psychosis is best defined as a loss of reality, when someone suffers from Psychosis they experience hallucinations, hold delusional beliefs and have disorganised thinking patterns. This can also impact on social interaction, it is said to be a ‘fever’ of mental illness. Psychosis is due to an excess of dopamine in the middle of the brain and we know that if you have an excess of dopamine for any reason this can make people psychotic. Similarly all the drugs that we use to treat psychosis, they decrease dopamine in the mid-sections of the brain. Schizophrenia on the other hand, is a very serious psychosis, and it is for life.
 Dr Robin Murray
What does the dopamine system do?
Well dopamine is the chemical which grabs your attention, so if suddenly something exciting happens, then this is mediated by dopamine, you pay attention to something when dopamine is released. And in psychosis, what people find is that everything seems to catch their attention. A little noise or the way that somebody grimaces or somebody new comes in the door, or they hear something on the television, all of these things seem to be tremendously important and it's because the dopamine makes them important. They think, "Gosh, these are really important to me" and begin to connect them. They think one is connected to the other, they think that television is talking to them, they think the neighbours are conspiring against them. Stick them all together and they develop a sort of delusional explanation that all of these things are happening to me because I am tremendously important, or because the CIA are ganging up against me. And it's the dopamine release that causes people to develop these illusions.
And what role does cannabis play in the dopamine system?
Well the cannabis just revs up the dopamine. We know that from animal studies, there have been fewer human studies, but there are now increasing studies examining that question, exactly what happens when you give cannabis and put somebody in a scanner. Of course this is one of the reasons why cannabis is useful for people with multiple sclerosis or people with chronic pain.
That is to say one of the beneficial effects is the effect of the dopamine and this can help relax some of the muscles of people with neurological disease. So this is one of the reasons why we like taking cannabis, we feel it's therapeutically beneficial. The other function of dopamine of course is that it's a reward chemical, it's a pleasure chemical.
All the drugs that people take, everything from alcohol to cannabis to amphetamines, they all rev up the dopamine system and in most people that just gives pleasure, but some people appear to be vulnerable, that revving up the dopamine system can induce a psychosis.
So the fact that cannabis directly affects the dopamine system suggests to you that it's plausible that it plays a role in psychosis?
Yes.
Some people have compared the influence of cannabis on mental health and the influence of tobacco on lung cancer, do you think that is a fair comparison?
I think it's perhaps more like alcohol actually than smoking, because cigarette smoking account for nearly all of lung cancer, whereas cannabis accounts only for a proportion of schizophrenia. Most people can drink alcohol and they don't get liver failure, they don't become an alcoholic, the more they drink, the more likely they are to develop problems and similarly with cannabis, that most people will get nothing but benefits from smoking cannabis, but a proportion of people will develop problems particularly if they smoke very heavily.

Interesting read and some decent points mades.
I'm not sure about the legalisation of cannabis, I smoke it (sometimes), and I have my bad times and good times with it. But to be on the safe side, I would go with no. |

Weird i just had a bong before coming on this and it is an interesting read.
I Smoke cannabis not regularly back at home but since being in canada since jan we've been going through an ounce and it's finished about 5/6 days after and thats between 4 of us and it'll continue till april no doubt.
I enjoy the drug and i know about the consequenses of doing it heavily and i see it as a phase in life more than anything and when i'm home i do want to stop.
On nights out i'll usually have a few PR'd with me and as i don't drink (I'm a t total (H))the weeds combined with other substances...it's also alot more cheaper...discuss?

nice article.
I think the dutch system has some good sides to it, they can control the use on a certain level. But like alcohol, not every1 gets sick or dies from it. So why make soft drugs illegal, and have alcohol (a hard drug) legal.
If you legalize it to some extend, you can actually control the use of the product (ofcourse there are allways people who over use it). Alcohol has the same system you cannot use up to a certain amount. Whenever you are driving, you are not allowed to buy alcohol (beer) untill you are 16 (at least in NL), heavier stuff from 18. The dutch soft drugs system works the same, you can only buy it from certain shops (same goes for heavy alcohol like whisky), and you can only buy it from 18 and higher.
The only downside to the entire subject is. A lot of soft drugs going around in NL is home made, which is actually a lot more harmful then the legal stuff is (eg the one you buy in coffee shops).
Same goes for alcohol though if you make alcohol at home you can actually die pretty easy, it is very bad for your health and not really something to do.

legalizle cannabis, while we're on the topic.. fuck what it does to your head, it's your choice... and it would be ALOT easier to control if it was legal.
Smoking and alcohol destroys your mind aswell so I don't see why cannabis is illegal.

Very interesting article.
I'm going with legalizing, 'cause in most european countries it's not that difficult to buy some weed of the streets, in my opinion it's best to have control in coffeeshops so it's certain that people will get tested and approved weed.
I'm a regular user of weed and my mind hasn't been effected by it (atleast not noticeable to people around me). I think it's the people who are having psychological issues who're really effected by the use of weed.
Weed is an "emotions-booster", someone who is already a bit depressed starting to smoke weed regularly is bound to get himself into more psychological problems.
As long as weed is used in responsible hands there's nothing to worry about. It's the same with alcohol.

Good read.
I smoke whenever I can get my hands on some and ain't had any side-effects. Other drugs I would say no cos I've seen what kind of harm they're capable to cause, have to say tho that MDMA(ecstasy) isn't a bad drug either, have popped some ex's.
It sounds bad cos its a form of amfetamin but it doesn't cause any kind of physical dependancy either.
Going with legalizing aswell. Tobacco and alcohol are more dangerous than weed is. |

I think it's stupid to justify the legalisation of weed by comparing it to alcohol and tobacco. The thing is, alcohol and tobacco shouldn't be legal either, they just happen to have such a strong grip on society that prohibiting them aint gonna happen anytime soon. That however does not mean that we need more chemicals to screw ourselves up.
I'm gonna go with No. |

#24 hahahaha your the one that makes me laugh cuz yes ive touched in drugs, i touch on them everyday.
One of the reasons I quit playing its cuz I prefer enjoying all time I can with my friends, drinking, smoking pipes and having fun and not playing. Come to portugal in the summer and you can smoke a pipe with me ;)
Plus, I don't get it why you actually say people look big if they smoke drugs, I do smoke everyday a pipe atleast, but that doesn't make any1 bigger than the others, actually just blows ur fucking brain and you'll die sooner, its your choice if you prefer to enjoy your life smoking and drinking and have a shorter life but enjoying it more (if this is your way of enjoying), depends on the atitude of the person, which in my case is a yes, i prefer to drink a lot, smoke a lot and die sooner than to not enjoy and die when im 70 years old.

#25 alcohol is a depressant and people still tend to drink when theyre down(hypocrisy anyone?), my dad is schizophrenic and he both drinks and smokes weed (i know not the smartest thing to do but he has been drinking for god knows how long). i know he'd be MUCH better off quitting alcohol and instead smoke weed, i'm not saying weed is better but you can't deny the fact that alcohol destroys you in ways weed could not. YES it affects your memory, it destroys brain cells, it can lead to a psychosis, but it is nowhere near as destructive and addictive(in fact weed is only psychologically addictive) as alcohol. so please don't go around saying people should instead drink regularly. if you drink occasionally, while going out with mates on the weekends or so, that's okay, just don't think you can get away with drinking day in day out and not get addicted, it's just inevitable you'll be struggling with a serious addiction very soon.
i know, you may not have meant every day of the week with ''drinking on the regular'' but if you did then here's what i had to say lol. |
