page 2: Call of Duty 4 Preview

After the recent Crossfire Devotii Challenge in Enschede, the Netherlands last month, we will once again be preparing ourselves for yet another major Call of Duty 4 competition: the Multiplay i33.

The once mainly UK based tournament at the Newbury Racecourse will be the playground for some of biggest names in Call of Duty 4 and the first CoD4 event featuring a North American team. Fighting for a total prize purse of €12,000, an estimated 55 teams will be hitting it off in the i33 groupstages, after which 32 teams (unconfirmed) are set to compete in a single elimination bracketstyle playoff.

Coming into the tournament as the first seed team is Team Dignitas, winners of the first i-Series event in Call of Duty 4, the i32 (13:07 against TLR in the Grand Final). After a somewhat dissapointing performance at the CDC4, losing to TEK9 is two straight maps, Dignitas announced their new in-game leader  SKO just under two weeks ago, who will be replacing lukZar in the main starting line-up. With a brand new ingame leader, Dignitas will be looking to prove the critics wrong and what better place to do it than the i-Series, an event they won five times in a row.

One of the main candidates for the title will be TheLastResort, who are rated top3 in most of the guest predictions after a dominant performance at the Crossfire Devotii Challenge. At the i-Series, the highest seeded UK team TLR also have to opportunity to qualify for the iPOWER tournament, which is set to take place at the ESWC Masters this summer (read more). Many believed that TLR would have won the CDC4 was it not for the time constraints, but with an unchanged line-up and two second places in CoD4 so far (i32 & CDC4), the i33 will be the perfect opportunity for TLR to display their true potential.

Seeded third are Crossfire Devotii Challenge winners fnatic, who were able to defeat TLR 16 to 13 in overtime in the Grand Final, after having a hard time in their matches against H2k, eSuba and Intense, all of which ended 2-1 in favor of fnatic. fnatic are the main candidate for first place according to the guest predictions, although quite a few people have argued whether it was smart to change a winning team. Following their first place at CDC4 fnatic replaced klanne with the experienced Swedish CoD player  zEm, who just returned from Thailand and was a part of the EYEBALLERS team that later became fnatic. fnatic however look confident and i33 will be their chance to prove the changes were for the better.

After a 5-8th place at the CDC4, i33 would be TEK9's chance to shine. Fate however determined otherwise and TEK9 lack the preparation to play to their full potential, with  strelok having to sit out the event due to a crack in a bone close to his elbow joint. With  TW!ST acting as a stand-in for the i33, TEK9 are one of the outsiders at the i33 tournament and it will depend on the individual performances of the players whether they are capable of upsetting the main favorites.

Seeded fifth, behind Dignitas, TLR, fnatic and TEK9 is the all Danish team Roskilde Ravens, whose impressive results at the CDC4 have not gone unnoticed and have made them one of the main contenders at i33. With  Champ in Prague for a week, Roskilde were unable to fully prepare for the British event. Their CDC4 results, beating both Serious Gaming and LowLandLions 11 to 8, should however have given Roskilde a big confidence boost and they might be ready to take their next big step.

Being the only NA team attending, NERV LAN finalists Evil Geniuses will have the difficults task of representing North America at the Multiplay i33. Recent results at the NERV LAN, being able to dispose of Pandemic, PHG and Guardians, do show the team is on the right path, but their overall performance will be mainly dependant on the team's preparation with the European ruleset (no red-dot and a smg's limited to 2) and their overall ability to adapt. Although the guest predictions suggest otherwise, Team EG are a potential candidate for the title and it will be interesting to see how they will adapt to the more defensive European playstyle.

Seeded at a possibly dissapointing seventh place is i32 fourth place finishers Four Kings, who almost completely changed their line-up since the past i-Series event. i33 will be 4K's chance to prove the critics wrong, after going through several line-up changes since the start. New recruits vasquez, wiz and Geordie seem to have brought stability to the team, which according to corp is "without a shadow of a doubt, the strongest lineup that 4K has had so far". Many expect Four Kings to be capable of an upset, but whether it will be enough to challenge the main favorites and possibly qualify for the iPower tournament is yet to be seen.

The last topseeded team is none other than Team CoolerMaster, who have come a long way after showing some impressive results in the TEK9 PowerCup. Recent recruits yazzY and Stevy (both ex-L3) will not be there to assist the team at i33, which will be the first and final event of TCM with team captain mkz (who will be going in-active). Team CoolerMaster might lack the LAN experience to take their game to another level and upset the main candidates, but are definately a random factor and it will be interesting to see the way they've developed over the past month.

The challengers at the upcoming i-Series are the two local teams Exabyte and Packard Bell, who have not been given a top seed but are expected to do well. Although unable to fully prepare with  LuNi, Exabyte's dominant performances online could make them a team to watch at the i33. i33 will also be the team's first real chance to prove the critics wrong, after the continued cheating allegations over the past month.

Centralan 19 winners [PB] on the other hand have the opportunity to prove they are worthy of wearing the Packard Bell name. Packard Bell are not expected to challenge the absolute top, but have the opportunity to prove their worth and possibly cause a small upset.

* NOTE: Latest results includes the most recent matches of a specific team at LAN. In some cases line-up seriously differ from the team that played those matches.

Were not at all concerned with proving anything. We will do our best, and hopefully we can get a good placing.
