page 1: It's not only about fun anymore.

ClanBase is not doing so well these days, at least for all the Call of Duty fanbase they have worked so hard in the past to build, something they took years to achieve is about to being thrown away in a couple of months.

The recent scandals on EuroCup XVII have been hitting hard on ClanBase's reputation and the future never looked darker to the once Call of Duty king. ESL must be laughing at them and with reason to do so.

It all started with the prizes ClanBase arranged for this season's EuroCup, shop vouchers. A lot of teams complained about it and some like Fnatic even took time to officially start a boycott on the league's tournaments due to the "lack of respect" shown by ClanBase superiors in offering shop vouchers to a game that has done so much for them throughout these years while ESL with a serious lack of Call of Duty history is going high these days with 1,500€ up for the grabs on Major Series Season 2 and a confirmed 3,000€ prize purse for the third season. And this is online.

Several lan events through Europe have been kind enough to give a shot at Call of Duty 4 and they seriously don't regret such bet. Multiplay i32 was the first one to ever host a competition just a couple of days after release in UK, i33 was a huge success and i34 is full for a few months, last two with a guaranteed prize purse of 12,000€. Activision did the job while spending a few thousand bucks to boost the competitive scene and are now enjoying a great summer season this year.

Acer Challenge was a sucess, iPowergames will be hosted during ESWC Masters of Paris 2008 and Call of Duty 4 is in their plans, Antwerp Esports Festival and The eXperience bring another 47,500€ cash up for the graps this summer, the CGS Kick-off tournament could have been better if it wasn't for the age restrictions and dates, yet it was a great event for those attending. With such a busy and gr€at schedule, are teams really interesting to spend their time practicing for gameshop vouchers?

The Fnatic boycott got bigger the last couple of weeks with Meet Your Makers and Team Dignitas joining them. The H2k/Dignitas scandal had a really negative impact on ClanBase, although they were only following the rules and it's clear that players must play with the registered GUID, the enormous lack of sportsmanship from H2k ended up affecting not only them but also ClanBase, really bad. SpoX handling the case while being a member of H2k caused an ever bigger uproar against him and the league, though whoever would be there, the decision had to be the same.

Yesterday's happenings were another critical hit on them. SPEED-LINK was announced by ClanBase itself as the winner of EuroCup XVII after beating H2k Gaming by 25-15 in a great match followed by dozens of fans through QuadV. It was a community member who remembered ClanBase their EuroCup playoffs was played on double elimination and therefore, SL would have to win two matches as they come from the lower bracket. That's a huge lack of organization and responsibility.

ClanBase lacks of funds to properly run their tournaments and attract the best of Counter-Strike 1.6 or Warcraft 3 playing in their leagues, to organize LAN events or even reward their dedicated and hard working admins for the several hours they put into it day after day. Admins become less and less interested in properly running the league, teams start to move away for other well organized tournaments and the reputation of ClanBase that took so many years to build is being destroyed in a couple of months.

Call of Duty 4 has reached a level where playing for medals or a EuroCup title in their awards page is something from the past. It's not only about fun anymore.

 Hi guys,
Just wanted to inform you, NOT to schedule your final match yet, as we got a surprise coming up.
I know things have been messy this season, which is understandable, but we hope to end this cup with a blast.
What this will, I will be informing you about in the upcoming days.
Please keep this private.
Thank you, and keep an eye on your inbox this week.

Nice read, and so true. Unprofessional and ridiculous that so many negative topics arise in such a short period of time. Would be nice to see what other options are available instead of clanbase (and ESL).

Nice read. It's kind of hard to pin the blame on anyone though; the cod4 admins take their orders from higher up and are forced to abide by out of date rules that nobody seems to be able to change. As far as I'm aware, the vast majority of the rules were brought in in cod1 and have been enforced the whole way through it and cod2 until now :S

Way to keep that message private btw, whoever leaked it.
#10 Netherlands H2k SpoX 2008-06-19 16:39:22
I can confirm that private message. I'm willing to explain that as well. We arranged with dfb from Antwerp Esports Festival, to hold a LAN FINAL at the AEF lan itself, but unfortunately my ISP was down for days, so I couldn't stop this match from taking place. In the end it didn't matter anymore, cause both SPEED-LINK and H2k.TT rather played the match online, due too allowed players etc.

So the surprise was LAN FINALS, but since both teams did not want this, it's a no go.

Anyway, we learned from our mistakes, like we all do. I'm sure next season will be a lot better. Like revoltz said, next season might have prizes again, who knows?

Actually it's not clanbase who runs the shots, but big brother GGL. Now, it's only that they run the olympic e-sports this year.. but besides that, I don't really think GGL has a lot to say in gaming anymore.

When they took over Clanbase a lot of the heart and soul went away. Ok, the pumped in some cash, but if you ask me... lol it's really nothing if you see the price money the give away.

To be honest I think Clanbase is a sinking ship, but very slow.. it's started 2 years ago and you will see, if things don't change in dramatic matters it will be lost for good.

To be honest.. I think not many people would miss it. Clanbase people... take a good look at ESL... they respect the gamers.. and they get the respect back.. maybe you guys should learn that aswell. Because without gamers.. without the support .. there ain't no clanbase!

( Ah granda LINKAGE ;D )

Definitely they are not doing well in general, GGL lost the heart and won some money addiction. Clanbase is just becoming one more common competition center, which is not good at all, its not about fun anymore.

nice read.

This was actually the first season that I felt the OpenCup was arranged better (in terms of rules, so apart from the huge fuckups that happened) than the EuroCup.
I remember playing OpenCups with ladderrules, different rulings on smoke or no smoke in COD2 between EuroCup and OpenCup etc.

The EuroCup is experiencing what many OpenCups have been like the past years, which is sad because it's supposed to be prestigious and what not.

The admins made awful mistakes this season. GGL/CB still have to hand out a lot of prize money. Unacceptable and a boycott is a must imo, just as it was at the CPL back in the day.

ESL is the future in my oppinion, the site just needs to be renewed.

ESL's premium system is shit. Of course if you have money to spend on it its ok, but buying it is useless.
CB was a big league in the past but lost a lot due to its outdated rules. I wouldn't blame the admins since they give it the best. A gaming vocher is better than nothing.

The I32 Tourney was the weekend the game was released so Im guessing it was first.

Nice Article, sad but true fact that ClanBase is a sinking ship and as a former EuroCup Supervisor myself its sad to see. Common sense was lacking in many aspects this season and rules got followed like robots mixed with utter lack of match reports and news throughout the event (EuroCup Finals news posted after the match had started, GG).

Prize money was never an issue before as the competition carried with it a lot of prestige and the opportunity to play against the best teams in europe. Now however with those best teams boycotting it all that is left is a prize and with those being game vouchers only the good and average teams will enter.

Tbh, to me clanbase always was like this; lot's of admins with an IQ below 80, and the chance of getting a hold in any of them on mIRC, was like NOT existing

Dignitas played with an unallowed player, they deserved their loss. If it was a random B-team nobody wouldve cared, but because it's Dignitas we suddenly should step up for it or something?

The thing I do agree with is lack of prize money and organisation (concerning the finals).
