page 4: Behind the Scenes

This could maybe be the most interesting part of the article, things that will usually not get mentioned anywhere, basics for the crew and stuff that a normal person wouldn´t figure out. Let´s see what Samot has to reveal behind the curtains of Fragbite.
When writing news items and so on, how do you divide the work over all the crew members? Do you use any system, or is it the one that finds the news writes about it?
Samot: We haven’t got any system to divide the work. Since most of the work has to be done immediately to get the news articles out there, there isn’t really time to wait for anyone in particular to be able to take care of a news item. We have goals and demands that people need to meet though.
When doing coverage on an event, how do you decide who will go and who will not?
Samot: Who gets to go is determined on the basis of activity and skill. That basically translates to whoever has worked the most with news and articles and has the necessary skills (for certain positions we need photographers or video editing skills) gets to go.Unfortunately everyone has other obligations, such as work, school or both to take care of so very few of the crew members are available for a normal event. We’ve had to scramble several times just to get the necessary skills on board for an event. If I remember correctly we contacted our latest recruit one week before an event, asking him “Hey, how do you feel about going to Los Angeles next week?” :)
When you are going to an event, how do you put up the budget for that event? Do you give the crew a specific amount which they can use on food and so on, or do you just give away your credit card and say “behave children”? ;)
Samot: No, actually Fragbite doesn’t cover any food expenses for the people abroad. At the moment there is no efficient way for us to manage the book keeping for it (long story). Other than that, Fragbite covers all expenses associated with a trip.
You are also the coder of Fragbite, was this your first code project or did you have any experience from older projects?
Samot: Yes, Fragbite was my first major project. Luckily the code has had some rewrites since the first releases :)
When upgrading/adding features to Fragbite, do you ever get the feeling “what the heck was I coding over here?” when you read the source code?
Samot: I get that all over the place with the old version that was being developed :) I’m not touching that code much nowadays though!
Has Fragbite ever gotten sued or had a threat to get sued for content that’s been published?
Samot: We’ve had a couple of those incidents, but nothing that’s gone very far. Most of it is just talk to try to scare you off. As long as you’ve got credible sources and facts to backup whatever you’re claiming the threats cannot really hurt you.
Now-a-days when you are well known, do you get any invites for big events such as “come and do coverage on our event and we´ll pay for the hotel?” or do you usually have to pay for the whole trip yourselves?
Samot: We do get invites to come and cover events for free. We have never accepted any trip entirely for free though as we feel that would hurt our objectivity. We would ultimately like to pay for the entire trips ourselves, but both for our people on site and the people taking care of the bookings (me and Filip) it can be very time saving to let the tournament organizers take care of the hotel and just tag along with the players the entire time. It saves a lot of time, and especially if you’re already up over your ears in work with exams or whatever coming up, we might be inclined to accept hotel offers. We have accepted two offers for hotels in the history of Fragbite, but when we have more free time we would definitely like to avoid it.
Lately you have also been uploading your videos to YouTube or MSN video then linking it directly to your site, which I personally think is great, but what made you realize that? Someone just hitting their head in the bed table or were you tipped off from users?
Samot: We gathered some ideas from gaming blogs and other sites, and also had some requests from our users. Lately we’ve have had some problem with aiming too high, forgetting what the users really value. For example, we were working hard with developing a streaming solution of our own. It would’ve looked a lot better and integrated a lot smoother than the Youtube or MSN Video does, but from the user’s point of view the difference isn’t that great.

A fantastic piece of e-sport journalism, refreshing to see you ask some questions that alot of people wouldnt normally ask. The ones that interested me where the ones to do with the site setup and about the crew of the site and how they manage their time.
I hope to see fragbite at some point covered in english. Although some of the translations of interviews they've done in the past have been enjoyable long may this continue!
good job. |
