page 1: Background

Fragbite, the biggest eSports site in Scandinavia, who cover the game Counter-Strike and.. a little more. The site is probably known by every Counter-Strike player out there, who are able to handle the English language. One of Fragbites best features is their betting system where you can bet imaginary points on Counter-Strike matches and sometimes other things such as FIFA World Cup matches and so on. Every month the top 5 bidders get added to the hall of fame of Fragbite which also has some status on their forum of course ;)
Also not to forget their great media covers with pictures, crew blogs, interviews and video content flowing in from events such as CPL, ESWC, WCG and so on.
I have gotten the chance to talk to one of the founders of Fragbite, Tomas “samot” Hansson, and ask some questions, so I hope you will have a good read.
Hi Tomas, before we start with the more personal info about you, lets tell the readers a little about the beginning of Fragbite, and how you got the whole concept/idea.
How did you come up with the idea of Fragbite? Or what got you starting to think about something like it?
Samot: Fragbite was basically founded on the belief that we could do something better than what was currently on the market when we started. The reason my brother and I had for starting Fragbite was not any “idea”. We just saw an opportunity to become the largest site on the topic, and that was what motivated us in the beginning.
And of course the obvious follow up question, how did you guys come up with the name Fragbite? Did it just pop into your heads or did you have some more names you voted on to chose from?
Samot: We discussed the name quite a bit actually. It was originally Fragbyte, but a misunderstanding lead to us trying out Fragbite, and then in the end getting stuck with it. From a marketing perspective it’s far from optimal though (because of the unobvious spelling), and had we chosen a name today I think we would’ve picked something else :)
In the beginning when you first started Fragbite, how many people were involved in the release? Just you, and your brother, or did you already have a crew back then?
Samot: My brother and I started the site, but we quickly assembled a crew of about ten persons that worked on the site since the launch.
Back then, did you ever think that Fragbite would get as big as it is now?
Samot: Yes, definitely. Our goal from the start was to become the largest Counter-Strike website in Sweden, and that is what we are today.
Fragbite has now been online for more than 5 years, starting back in 2002, if you had the chance to go back and change something that went wrong, or that might have wanted another outcome on, what would that be?
Samot: Five years is a long time, and I’m sure that if I’d sit down and go through every decision we’ve taken I’m sure I would’ve done some differently. All in all though, I’m pretty satisfied with how things have turned out, not forgetting that there’s always room for improvement.
The founders, Tomas and Filip, brothers of the Hansson family.

A fantastic piece of e-sport journalism, refreshing to see you ask some questions that alot of people wouldnt normally ask. The ones that interested me where the ones to do with the site setup and about the crew of the site and how they manage their time.
I hope to see fragbite at some point covered in english. Although some of the translations of interviews they've done in the past have been enjoyable long may this continue!
good job. |
