page 1: Interview
Interviews, they're ten a penny. So here, have another one! I'm speaking with Ben "bAc" Coppard of zeroPoint Gaming's new COD4 squad prior to his teams departure for i35. I'll ask "bAc" some of the rudementary interview questions and maybe highlight a team that might cause a few upsets at the upcoming i35 LAN.
Ben, zP! wouldn't be the world's most famous COD4 team, just quickly introduce yourself and the team to the readers here at tek9 please.
Hi Graham and tek9, I'm Ben Coppard aka "bAc" from zeroPoint! Gaming's all UK COD4 Team. Im 23 years old, live down in Kent the so called "Garden of England" and co-lead our COD4 team with my 21 year old brother Matt aka "turtz". Our lineup is easily one of the oldest in the scene and consists of the Anthony "Frag" Brazier who's 25, then we got 24 year old Alex "RiN" Angear, also another Kent boy, then theres Matt Squires, aka "rellie". At 17, hes the only minor in our team, but probably the most mature member!
You were in a COD4 team under the zP! flag not so long ago and got pretty publically dumped out of the team, though they soon fell to pieces, which some, including myself, thought was deserved frankly. When the oppurtunity arose were you sceptical of rejoing zP! in any way?
No at all, i approached zP's manager Apu on the off chance he'd give us a chance, and I think now he's quite happy he has. zP!'s website has been my online home for just under a decade and rejoining them with the responsibility of doing the community proud was something I was happy to do. Given that our lineup is amazingly stable and we are all really good friends, I didn't see stability being a problem at all, otherwise I wouldnt have approached Apu in the first place.
What happened when i was playing in the first zP! team was regrettable, but it was early in the game and the lineup we had just didnt work for a whole host of reasons. Given that old team had some fairly big ego's (including my own) and I never really put any effort in during practice, frag whored ttm in officials and wasn't having fun with some of the players i was playing with, I was quite happy to go in the end and persue happier gaming times.
Lets talk about i35. It will be this team's third multiplay outing, though with an altered lineup, and the first under the zeroPoint! tag. Some readers at tek9 may or not be aware that zeroPoint! Gaming has a user base of 15,000 members, do you feel a sense of pressure to perform or can you tackle this lan the same way you did last time out.
Well, although 4 of the 5 we had played at i33 as Blitzkreig and 3 of the 5 played as dystopia at i34, the 5 we have now is the lineup we have been looking to achieve for quite some time and feels right, whereas the others teams that were there previously, although good with guys like scottze and johnnyzar from oF and the amazing robzj from HeXagon, didnt have the same team spirit that this lineup has now.
The game has been out a year now, and given the fact that we had very little S&D knowledge when we left the CTF game Day of Defeat to take on COD4, I think we are finally at a stage to do some damage at i34 with what is our "Drunken LAN Dream Team" as rel refers to it :D Basically there is some pressure to do well under the zP! tag given the community that is behind it, but they are all behind us and that can only help i guess. We were hoping to go into this LAN under the radar so as to cause a few upsets, so im hoping people dont read this interview really, as we prefer being the underdogs ;D
With the likes of Fnatic pulling out of i35, LowLandLions & Button Bashers heading to MaxLan instead and some decent results for your team of late, most notably the victory over TLR (13-9 on mp_crash)in ESL EPS UK, you guys must be quietly confident of placing in the prize pool at least.
We are without a doubt a big game team, we've reached the stage where PCW's are boring the hell out of us and as a team, we only seem to play well when theres an opponent worth beating or money to be won. The game vs. TLR showed what we are capable of and without trying to sound too arrogant, we are capable of playing much better than that on our day.
As far as LAN goes, the fact some of the bigger teams are in France means theres more pressure on us to do well and it seems right now that we have a much better chance of placing in the prize pool if we fire on all cylinders, but...we will see what happens i guess, EG, Reason and Dignitas are still there to name a few so we are expecting a tough LAN against UK teams that will have practiced at least as much as we have.
Who do you think might surprise other teams at i35?
I think DOK Gaming will be stronger than people expect and if a TCM team get their act together at LAN for once, they should be up there. OpenFire also have some talented players, but tbh, I predict Dignitas taking the LAN with EG just behind, they have the experience required and a really strong and quite intimidating lineup.
During i35 you lads will be playing Reason in the EPS UK (Reason will also be playing Sypher in game week 4 at the event), should be another decent challenge and a good yard stick to see where you guys are at skill wise.
Yeah it will be a really good test, its on strike which we are quietly confident on, not sure exactly when we are playing them though, hopefully early on. They are an extremely talented team and like the TLR game, we are approaching it with an open mind and we will see what happens.
Though they have possibly the worst website in the history of eSports, ESL's £100 win bonus in the EPS UK is a nice little earner. Can you see zeroPoint! taking a few more scalps and vindicating the ESL's decision to invite you guys when Vitriolic and waSte Cadets dropped.?
I think that decision has already been vindicated with our first game tbh, as TLR have looked strong in every other game they've played, but we will carry on and try and win as much money as possible. Realistically, all the games we have will be very tough, no question, but if we play like we have been in the games that matter, we may well have some christmas spending money :)
Right now I suspect we're both midway through downloading COD5 Beta (I am!) and that in itself throws up a few questions. Where does the scene go, as COD4 is blatantly done and dusted, what is zeroPoint's take on the realease? I know its extremely early to predict anything about the game but will you guys continue port to COD5 or just throw in the towel entirely.
Im quite sure Beta is translated from the Latin phrase meaning "Not Done Yet", but i've given it a go and I reckon it will be pretty playable after all the obvious fixes are implemented. Given that the 5 we have love playing together, we will indeed be looking to get into COD5 as early as possible whilst finishing our EPS season off in COD4. Given our previous backgrounds, WW2 gameplay should suit us nicely we think :)
Just a few quick ones:
Best gaming experience. Getting to share a room with the sex kitten that is Robbie "robzj" Heaton at CGS :DD
Favourite TV show. Scrubs
Favourite food Curry
Favourite drink. Cider and Black
All time favourite game. Day of Defeat 1.3...played it for 5 years, still doesnt bore me now.
PES or FIFA? PES no question.
And finally the customary shoutout list. The zP! COD4 Team and Gaming Community and anyone who knows me from DOD :)
Big thanks and best of luck to Ben and zeroPoint for sharing his thoughts on the upcoming lan and I hope to publish a few more articles in the near future here at tek-9.org.

I'm sure most PCW's do bore you due to your inability to move ingame (including publics) :O |
