Counterstrike 1.6, Source and the recently released CS Promod have been subject to a lot of discussion and are always a heated topic on public forums.
The 1.6 scene has mostly looked at Source with a lot of criticism about certain aspects of the game. What do you think are the main points for improvement in CS:S and do you feel there is anything that it does in-fact do better than 1.6?
fnatic\cArn: I´ve kinda surrendered to the fact that CSS will never be like 1.6, it’s just obvious that CSS is a totally different game, a game that I personally don´t like at all. I think it’s bad for the scene with two different CS titles, just look at the Quake scene(s).
Have you personally ever tried out other games like CS: Source or perhaps even a individual game like Quake, and have you ever considered switching to another game?
fnatic\cArn: I´ve never considering switching game, but I’ve tried CSS and in the past I was a Quake World player. Nowadays my focus is on 1.6, but to mix up I challenge my teammates in Starcraft, a really good game in my opinion.
If the 1.6 community dies down, do you see yourself playing any other games on a competitive level or will 1.6 be your last?
fnatic\cArn: Impossible to answer now, my focus is on 1.6, as I said. But when the time comes, and a switch is necessary I would consider it wisely.
With the CGS offering $30,000 salaries and additional bonuses, was the team ever tempted to switch to Source?
fnatic\cArn: Tempted maybe, but still, there is loads of tournaments out there with big cash prizes, so for us it makes no sense switching at the moment.
Most of the top American teams have decided to make the switch to Source to compete in the CGS. Why do you think this didn’t happen in Europe (where the CGS was mostly dominated by long-time CS:S players) and you see any chances of this happening in Europe and if so, under what conditions?
fnatic\cArn: One factor is that the 1.6 scene here is much bigger, another factor is that CGS is just so Americanized, for me CGS is still showbiz, I think CGS is removing many competitive factors mixing up the games, cause seriously, who want to rely on a DoA player to bring home victories for you?
Most recently we saw the first beta release of CS Promod, which had been in the making for several years with the main idea to transfer the competitive aspects of Counter-Strike 1.6 to the Source engine. Have you or anyone of the team tried out CS Promod and if so, what where your overall feelings towards the game?
fnatic\cArn: I´ve tried it, not so positive yet, but since it´s still beta stage it´s fair to just give them some more time. I prefer the promod rather than CSS.
Of course a substantial number of bugs have yet to be fixed before the game can be played on a competitive level, but do you think the game can unite both scenes and if so, would either you or fnatic consider switch to CS Promod when the game is ready to be played?
fnatic\cArn: It could be, but then they have to make it perfect. But one thing worries me; I really think that the CSS teams are too afraid to see changes to their game or switch to Promod, since the 1.6 teams will be ahead there. That’s just my opinion, but I really think so.
